The Red Sox will have most of their starters back on the field Wednesday night as they head to Sarasota to face off against the Baltimore Orioles.
After the backups (in particular some fringe bullpen arms) suffered a dismal 15-4 loss against the Cardinals, it's good to have the starters in action for the game that actually hits the airwaves. For the second time this year, NESN will broadcast the action starting at 7:05 p.m. EST.
(Yes, that means a game thread, for those interested.)
- Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
- Dustin Pedroia, 2B
- Shane Victorino, RF
- Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
- Will Middlebrooks, 3B
- Stephen Drew, SS
- Jonny Gomes, LF
- Daniel Nava, 1B
- Mark Hamilton, DH
The exceptions remain the same early on in this spring season, with David Ortiz and Mike Napoli both sitting out. This will give Daniel Nava more chance to show he can handle first base as he fights for a bench spot. Hamilton will fill in for Ortiz, but seems the odd man out here in terms of his chance to have a place with the Sox this year.
The real center of attention tonight might be Franklin Morales, who we haven't seen take the mound since last August. While most conversations on rotation depth these days involve the likes of Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster, Franklin Morales might well top the list after his stint in the rotation in 2012. He'll only get the one inning tonight, but should get stretched out more as we get closer to the regular season.
