Red Sox Using Relievers Against Boston College, Northeastern

Rather than use his starters, a group that manager John Farrell doesn't plan to deploy until next week, Boston's relievers will get to pitch against the college rosters of Boston College and Northeastern University in Thursday's spring training doubleheader.

The Red Sox are overloaded with relievers at the moment, and the entire group will see plenty of work this spring in order to narrow down just who should be kept around. (And, even figuring that part out, who will be in the majors and who will be in the minors.) Two pitchers who are definitely going to be in the Opening Day bullpen, barring injury, will get the start against the two universities, with trade acquisition and closer Joel Hanrahan facing Northeastern, and free agent signing Koji Uehara getting the nod against Boston College.

You can't find two more different relievers than these two, as Hanrahan is effectively wild, racking up both walks and strikeouts en route to success, while Uehara rarely misses the strike zone, but continues to miss bats regardless. They'll be followed by a few relievers just looking to get work in, but even more trying to justify their spot on the roster or in the organization. BC will see fewer pitchers overall, as a couple of big-league relievers but minor-league starters will be in attendance.
