World Series lineups: Same faces, different places for Game 5

It's the same eight men for the Red Sox in Game 5. The only difference is how they're arranged.

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

The Red Sox will have the same starting lineup for Game 5, just in a slightly different order.

Boston Red Sox (2-2)

  1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
  2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
  3. David Ortiz, DH
  4. Jonny Gomes, LF
  5. Daniel Nava, RF
  6. Xander Bogaerts, 3B
  7. Stephen Drew, SS
  8. David Ross, C
  9. Jon Lester, SP

St. Louis Cardinals (2-2)

  1. Matt Carpenter, 2B
  2. Shane Robinson, CF
  3. Matt Holliday, LF
  4. Carlos Beltran, RF
  5. Yadier Molina, C
  6. Matt Adams, 1B
  7. David Freese, 3B
  8. Pete Kozma, SS
  9. Adam Wainwright, P

So Jonny Gomes hits a big homer and gets the fourth spot in the next game. It's understandable that John Farrell wants to move David Ortiz up in the order, particularly given how the Cardinals pitched around him. What's less understandable is overlooking a career's worth of a .310 OBP against right-handed pitchers in favor of one big swing of the bat.

Hopefully Gomes gets the job done, but it's hard to find a good thought process which leads to this decision over, say, Daniel Nava or Xander Bogaerts. Gomes is the guy you hope runs into one at random with all the OBP guys already having had their chance to, well, get on base. Not the guy you turn to to keep a rally rolling.

But so it goes...
