  • It's been a rough week or so for Red Sox fans. First, the offense died out during their West Coast road trip, then they proceeded to have their pitching crushed by the Yankees at Fenway. As I write this, they are losing 7-2 in the seventh, on their way to yet another loss. This loss will set them back to .500. With the All Star Break beginning today, time is running out for this team to go on a run and push itself into a playoff position. One reason for optimism: The return of stars, such as Jacoby Ellsbury. (Mike Scandura; Fire Brand of the AL)
  • With the All Star break also comes the annual tradition of trade talk. According to the always rational Nick Cafardo (Sarcasm Alert!), the Sox should trade Beckett, or any other star, to give the team a "jolt". (Nick Cafardo; Boston Globe)
  • Another big key to any possible second-half playoff-push will be the resurgence of Adrian Gonzalez. According to Eric Seidman, that resurgence may not be as inevitable as we may think. (Eric Seidman; ESPN.com $$$)
  • Franklin Morales had looked good in his first three starts, and faced his first big test this weekend against the Yankees. Unfortunately, his fastball failed him. (Mark Daniels; Boston Herald)
  • Bud Selig and company got mad at the Red Sox for showing a replay of a close play for the fans at Fenway to see. They were so mad because, ya know, it's 1965, and we're not ready for that kind of technology in baseball. (Craig Calcaterra; Hardball Talk)
  • Yesterday MLB held its annual Futures Game, which showcases the top minor league talent from the farm systems across baseball. The game featured maybe the most feared group of young pitchers in the game's history. Amongst them was one Matt Barnes, of the Salem Red Sox. (Joe Lemire; Sports Illustrated)
  • For all the stat-nerds out there, Sam Miller is doing a fascinating study on pitch-by-pitch evaluation and batting average on balls in play. I'll definitely be interested to see the follow-up on this piece. (Sam Miller; Baseball Prospectus)
  • Remember how awesome it was when the Sox took a day to honor Tim Wakefield earlier this year? Well, it looks like we'll be getting a similar treat on July 21st. (Tim Britton; Providence Journal)
