Deven Marrero, Boston's first pick in the 2012 MLB draft, passed his physical and signed for $2.075 million, well over the recommended slot value of $1.75M. That's not a surprise, as Marrero was expected to be selected much earlier than #24 in the draft. The news gets better from there, though, assuming you aren't a Massachusetts' expatriate, anyway:
Marrero, like one of last year's first-round picks who signed early enough, Jackie Bradley, will start out his professional career with the short-season Lowell Spinners. Their season began this past Monday, and they'll be back at home as of June 22, to face Vermont. Marrero is already in town, and in fact took infield at Fenway Park on Wednesday afternoon.
