Darnell McDonald Placed On Disabled List, Jacoby Ellsbury Moved To 60-Day DL

The Red Sox have made a quick flurry of moves Sunday afternoon, moving Darnell McDonald to the disabled list with an oblique injury, shifting Jacoby Ellsbury to the 60-day disabled list, and calling up Mauro Gomez from Pawtucket.

For Ellsbury, this means the young outfielder won't be eligible to rejoin the team until June 13. While that's a bit further out than some of the early speculation suggested, the lack of news of late suggested that he wasn't going to be back in the next couple of weeks anyways.

Mauro Gomez is a 27-year-old first baseman, which means the Sox are back down to four outfielders for the time being. He has played some third base in years past, but let's just hope it doesn't come to that. He's been hitting for plenty of power down in Pawtucket, clubbing 10 homers for a line of .294/.336/.610 in 34 games.

It's not clear at the moment how Darnell McDonald injured himself, or even when. The outfielder played two days ago, but hasn't made a start since the May 7 game against Kansas City.
