We kick off the second half of the list with something of a surprise: the selection of 2011 first round pick and prospective catcher Blake Swihart.
I say surprise not because it was unexpected that Swihart beat out the competition this time around, but because he didn't long, long ago. Arguably the most hyped pick of our draft, and the one whose signing we spent much of the summer worrying about, Swihart is the sort of big-potential prospect we should have fun dreaming on for the next few years. A strong offensive profile limited only by the typical concerns for young players, if Swihart remains at catcher then he could prove the final, ideal answer behind the plate for Boston--assuming neither Lavarnway or Saltalamacchia do so first.
All this has left Swihart high up on some prospectors lists, but not quite so high on ours. Based on how voting has gone so far, you can either take that as a sign of the importance the fanbase puts on proximity to the majors, a comment on the depth of our system, or both.
Either way, he's here now.
1. Ryan Lavarnway, C/DH
2. Will Middlebrooks, 3B
3. Xander Bogaerts, SS

6. Jose Iglesias, SS
7. Matt Barnes, SP
8. Garin Cecchini, SS
