According to Terry Francona, Kevin Youkilis' exam back in Boston has revealed bursitis in his hip.
Red Sox fans are, of course, all-too-familiar with bursitis after it plagued David Ortiz' heel, keeping him out for about a week. While it's not clear how long Youkilis will miss with the injury, it seems entirely unlikely that he returns to the team before they return to Boston, though Terry Francona refused to rule the possibility out.
Youkilis is only just now returning from a trip to the disabled list due to a sore back. It's probably a good thing that the Sox' third baseman isn't experiencing any more trouble with the back, but a hip isn't exactly unimportant, especially with Youkilis playing the more difficult third base now.
If this just meant more rest for Kevin Youkilis, it probably wouldn't be much to worry about. Unfortunately, after tonight's terrible game, the Sox are now just 5.5 up on the Rays, and have to face quite the group of Tampa Bay pitchers over the last few games of their season series. For now, we'll just have to hope that it has the same effect on Youkilis as it did on Ortiz after he returned.
