2011 MLB Draft: Jordan Weems Selected at #111 by Boston Red Sox

New, comment

With their third round pick in the 2011 first year player draft, the Red Sox have selected catcher Jordan Weems. He is the second high school catcher they have selected, and is one they have been connected to for a little bit this year.

Weems was picked out of Columbus High School in Columbus, Georgia. The left-hander is 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds, and has a verbal commitment to Georgia State University. His father, Rick Weems, was an All-American catcher at Columbus State and went on to play in the Cardinals minor league system as well. His brother, Chase Weems, was drafted by the Yankees in the sixth round in 2007 and is currently playing for High-A Bakersfield with the Reds.

Weems hit .357 as a sophomore in 2009 and .403 last season. Baseball America's John Manuel says that he has a "plus arm" and a "good swing path", and, thanks to some YouTube digging, you can see that swing for yourself below, at the, starting around the 1:30 minute mark. Weems hits his second homer of the day not too far into the video:
