We are done with one week of spring training games, and so far, so good. Oh, sure, the Red Sox haven't exactly been dominating the Grapefruit League, but they never really seem to. What's important is that we're still injury free. Other than the ball Josh Beckett took to the head, which didn't even keep him off the field for more than a day, the Sox have escaped from week one unscathed.
That's not to say that they're perfectly healthy, though. Balmy though it may be down in Florida, that hasn't kept someone from bringing the flu into the clubhouse, and once it gets their, it spreads. Manager Terry Francona acknowledged during a recent game that the bug was being passed around the group, but passed it off as something they had to get out of the way every year. If that's the case, then it's a good thing Jon Lester is just missing a spring training start instead of one against the Yankees.
While others recover from the Flu, Adrian Gonzalez is still working his way back. Of course, if you asked him, he'd probably say he's been ready to go for a while--an idea that he reinforced by putting on a show in his first on-field batting practice. The first twenty pitches were all well and good, with no apparent problems. The last five were a bit better, with three of them not coming back--a performance which, according to NESN, prompted David Ortiz to shout "Sign him now!"
We'll let Theo and co. wait for the right moment to extend Gonzalez, but for now this is nothing but good news.
