Although he wasn't hitting his spots like usual, Curt Schilling was able to handle a Orioles lineup like the true veteran he is. Schilling went 7, allowed 5 hits, one run, struck out 3 and walked two.
I think our 8th inning guy is official: Hideki Okajima. Okajima continues to shutdown opponents. Last night he struck out 2 in his one inning of work. Brendan Donnelly came in for the 9th once the Sox offense put the game out of reach. He struck out one batter and allowed nothing.
With a great history against Daniel Cabrera, Alex Cora earned the start and did a great job. Cora smacked a solo home run to put the Sox on top 1-0 early. Cora went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Kevin Youkilis went 3-for-4 with 2 runs and a walk. Mike Lowell and Manny Ramirez each had two RBI a piece. Lowell extended his hitting streak to 11 games. JD Drew walked 3 times.
An awkward catcher interference came early in the game, landing Jason Varitek with his second error this season.
Curt Schilling on the catcher interference call:After going to 1-2 on Tejada I run a good FB in on his hands and jam him badly, but Angel calls catchers interference. I call BS. No way he hit the catchers glove and Angel was the only one who heard it. Wrong. Angel was right, Tejada barely nicked Tek’s glove and Angel heard it. Umpire 1 Me 0.
Winner: Curt Schilling
Schilling improved to 3-1 and lowered his ERA to 3.27
Winner: No one deserves the Mendoza for last night's strong effort.
