OTM's Top 20 Red Sox Prospects: #20 Ryan Kalish

Source: Name: Ryan Kalish
Age: 18
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 205
B/T: Left/Left
POS: Outfield
Draft: 9th round, '06
Projected '07 team: Lowell
ETA: 2011
Kalish's 2006 stats

Kalish is an athletic outfielder who also pitched at Red Bank Catholic High School in New Jersey. He was a three-sport athlete, playing baseball, basketball and football in high school. Kalish had committed to the University of Virginia, but opted out once drafted by the Sox. Kalish could have been drafted higher than the 9th round in the 2006 draft, but arm injuries scared off a few teams.

Kalish, raised a Sox fan thanks to family in Boston, is a "toolsy" outfielder with great contact and good speed on the basepaths. Kalish almost always takes the first pitch. Reports are that he never swung and missed during his senior season at Red Bank Catholic HS. Kalish may lack big league power, however. He is considered to be more of a gap hitter.

Kalish is very comparable to Boston's favorite and original Dirt Dog, Trot Nixon.

More on Kalish's pitching ability that we may or may not ever see:

Kalish also took the mound for the North, using a slow and deliberate delivery tossing a fastball that sat in the 83-84 range while touching 87. As a left-handed pitcher, you could see his potential for improvement as he threw the ball effortlessly.
