David Wells (once again) a Padre.

Fantastic deal for the Padres. David Wells at $3M plus incentives? Anyone want to guess on which of Wells or Johnson has the better season in the NL West? Which will provide better value?

Either way, kudos to the Padres. Jake Peavy. Greg Maddux. Chris Young. David Wells. Clay Hensley. Ladies and gentlemen, Kevin Towers:

"I think this will be our best rotation since 1998. We feel we can win with any of the five."

Agreed. You know I spend some time here giving pats on the back to other GMs, and it's hard not to like the rotation the Padres have next season. Three young hurlers, and possibly the two craftiest pitchers of our generation (apologies to Jamie Moyer). Not a Woody Williams or Chan Ho Park in sight.

Best of luck to Boomer, who was our de facto ace at the end of 2005, and tried to gut it out for us last season, ultimately netting us top catching prospect George Kottaras, who some of you may have heard of.
