News and Notes
Dustin Pedroia went 4-5 yesterday brining his AAA line up to .272/.362/.395. He's still not 100% healed from the wrist injury and he may not be 100% for a while. Until then the injury may hinder his performance. On the other side of the coin, Mark Bellhorn went 0-4, but at least he only struck out once. He is now 0-12 during his rehab assignment. Alejandro Machado hasn't played in 3 days, but I can't find any reason as to why. Bellhorn and Pedroia have been taking up the middle of the infield, but even when Bellhorn was given a day off on Wednesday, Machado wasn't in the line up.

Cla Meredith was hammered again, but the good news is that he didn't blow a save. The game was already lost before he had a chance to put it out of reach. Some members of the SoxProspects message board are optimistic that he will turn things around based on his peripherals. A .395 BABIP, 8.8 K/9, 2.6 BB/9, and 1.0 HR/9 all suggest that he's just been a victim of bad luck and that his 5.71 ERA is a lot higher than it should be. I might be a little bit optimistic if he wasn't getting killed in every game that he pitches in. It's not like he's had one or two bad games to throw off his stats. He's been just plain bad every time he's been given the ball. There's still plenty of chances for him to turn it around and his peripherals suggest that he will, but I think he's been a victim of bad pitching more than a victim of bad luck so far.

Hanley Ramirez has missed 2 straight games, but he is only resting up to be able to make it down the stretch. He has been suffering from a mildly strained groin, but has been and will continue to play through the pain.

Kason Gabbard had a no hitter going in to the 6th inning last night before everything unraveled in the 7th. He left the game in the 7th inning before managing to get anyone out, but not before he allowed 4 runs and took the loss.

Chris Naverson was designated for assignment to make room on the 40 man roster for Roberto Petagine. Narveson has had a pretty poor season so far with a 4.77 ERA in 111.1 IP to go along with 46 BB's and only 66 K's. He must first pass through waivers before he can rejoin the Paw Sox.

The first pitcher taken in the draft by the Red Sox, Craig Hansen made his pro debut last night for the GCL Red Sox. He came on in relief in the 4th inning to get the win while striking out 2 and not allowing any base runners in 1 inning of work. He's expected to be promoted up to AA some time in the near future.

With Jon Papelbon about to start working from the bullpen in hopes of making it back to the big league club in September, Pawtucket is down a starter. 27 year old Anastacio Martinez has been asked to fill the role. He'll likely make his first 2005 start tomorrow.
