The Sox signed Texas' first base coach DeMarlo Hale to be their new third base coach, taking over Dale Sveum's job.
Sveum left the Red Sox on Oct. 19 to become the third base coach for the Brewers.
Hale, 44, served as the Rangers' first base coach the last four seasons. In 2002, he was on the same staff as Red Sox manager Terry Francona, who was the bench coach of the Rangers at that time.
Hale interviewed for Boston's managerial vacancy in November 2003, but the Red Sox wound up choosing Francona. The day Hale interviewed, he had a press conference with the Boston media, and it was a bit chaotic as rumors spread like wildfire that the Red Sox had reached an agreement with the Diamondbacks on a deal for Curt Schilling.
This marks the return of Hale to the Red Sox organization, as he played and managed in Boston's Minor League system.
As for the rest of Boston's Major League coaching staff, pitching coach Dave Wallace, hitting coach Ron Jackson, bullpen coach Bill Haselman and bench coach Brad Mills all are expected to return.
However, Haselman is likely to become the first base coach. Lynn Jones, the first base coach the last two years, reportedly was offered another job in the organization. The Red Sox are likely to hire a former pitcher to replace Haselman in the bullpen.
