Re: Thank God its finally over!!!!
Give it another 72 hours before celebrating. Everything I've seen says the Mets want to give more AAV vs. more years. It'll be interesting to see what Santana does about that.

Re: Thank God its finally over!!!!
I want a talented stick instead and pretty much wanted one all along (so long as the Yankees didn't land Santana). We've got good pitching resources: let's see if we can get a young Manny/David replacement. Or a Clement/Ianetta/Salty calibre catcher.

No, it's not a done deal. But chances are...

Re: Thank God its finally over!!!!
+1. And I guess I didn't mean to imply that it wouldn't happen. Just, unlike if he had been traded to us or the Yanks, the 6-7 year at $20M/per isn't a foregone conclusion. The negotiations with the Mets (and really, it's just been speculation by those in the media) will probably start out with 4-5 @ $22-23M/per. All depends on how much Santana and his agent want to push for more security.

Re: Thank God its finally over!!!!
We definitely could use a young slugger or catcher... or a young, slugging catcher...

Theo did say he had no issues with a Crisp/Ellsbury battle for CF during spring training, but I'd like to see Ellsbury be able to start and for a new, young catcher...

Re: Thank God its finally over!!!!
How much leverage does Santana really have? If he breaks camp with the Twins, doesn't he cut off his nose to spite his face?

Re: Thank God its finally over!!!!
Plenty. The money will still be there after the season, with more competition potentially driving the prices up.

The onus is on the Mets. With Santana, it probably pushes the Braves and Phillies to just compete for the wild card. Without, it's a three-horse race with, to me, no clear-cut frontrunner. A healthy Santana probably guarantees the Mets the NL East. I'm sure his agent is going to make the Mets well-aware of this fact.

Worst-case for Santana is that he finishes in third or fourth with the Twins this season and then signs a mega-deal with the Mets, Red Sox, Yankees, Angels, etc. all competing for his services.

Re: Thank God its finally over!!!!
I suppose so, but even a relatively durable and highly consistent pitcher takes a risk by waiting on another season.

Re: Thank God its finally over!!!!
Agreed. But I think it's a weak and rather tenuous point for the Mets to bring up while trying to sell the guy on pitching for them for the next 5-7 years.

Re: Thank God its finally over!!!!
Yes, agreed.

I imagine there's a willingness on both sides to make this happen now.

Re: Thank God its finally over!!!!
Yep.

He was looking for (if the reports were correct) a 7/yr. extension for $20M per. The Mets (if the reports were correct) wanted to go with 5/yr with more per year.

Say, 6 years $126-132M? Crazy? I dunno.

Re: Thank God its finally over!!!!
Zito got 7/$126m (think the Giants will be picking up the 2014 club option?). So your numbers make sense. I'm very glad we're not getting hitched to such a long, expensive contract for a pitcher.

Re: Thank God its finally over!!!!
100% right.

As for the option, Zito will probably have just enough veteran-savvy at that point, assuming Brian Sabean is still in charge.

...is it obvious enough that my favorite non-OTM SBNation site is McCovey Chronicles?
