Trade "News"?

We'll make this quick. I'm tired. Some rumors involving the Sox and whatnot, former Sox players, or those who might have an impact on the AL East race.

  • Dye not to the Sox, for now.
Something about being guaranteed to play 5 days a week? Dye is clearly off whatever type of chair he likes to sit in, as there's no way he takes that much PT on this team.
  • Hillenbrand a Padres AAA player.
Let's go ahead and make a pact, OTMers. Let's agree that just because something doesn't cost you a lot, it doesn't mean it's a good move. This is a move for Kevin Towers that reminds you of the opposite of those oh-so-clever Vonage commercials: One stupid decision among many many smart ones.
  • The DRays want too much for Ty Wigginton.
You probably already knew this. Wigginton equals pop + no patience. Plays a variety of positions (1B, 2B, 3B, LF, RF), and might make sense if we had a bunch of LHHs at these positions. We don't. Plus, I think the Rays were asking not only for MDC or Justin Masterson, but their first-born sons as well. Talk about a misconception.
  • Any other rumors you've heard? (Destinations for WMP? SP insurance for Schill? A miracle cure for uselessus battus for 'Belli?) In addition, think of some on your own. For example, it's probably best for Brandon Moss if he seeks more opportunistic if not greener pastures. Who has use for a 23 y/o RF with good power, patience, and an arm in the OF? Do they perhaps have a mid-ceiling 3B prospect they'd like to send us?

Re: Trade "News"?
I'm sort of surprised by the interest in Dye. Granted, Drew's prolonged suckitude is getting so exasperating that it might be worthwhile benching him for Dye, who may start hitting better. Drew is underperforming to the point that I wonder if he is hiding an injury.

Also surprising is the Braves' reported interest in Teixeira. I thought their greatest need was pitching, not offense. Is trading Saltalamacchia for a stud 1st baseman really the best use of him?

Re: Trade "News"?
I agree that Drew has been a big disappointment and seems to be headed back to his earlier extreme slump.  Wonder why??  I also wonder why Papi cannot hit homers, although he continues to hit basehits with the best of them.  Still, a big sudden change that is not going back to his previous status quo??

Re: Trade "News"?
Papi has a knee injury that is going to require arthroscopic surgery after the season. Having had such injuries myself, I can assure you that while he may look ok, the knee severely reduces his ability to hit for power. Any homers he hits this year are going to be based primarily on upper body strength, but you need to generate power with your legs to hit a lot.

Drew injured?
could be the reason.

i never had the chance to see as much from Drew as this year (though i always liked him as a player).

i have the impression that he swings at firstpitches way to often.

for a guy with a good eye not very helpful.

i wonder if this was his way of hitting before?

adn lost night the bad play at the wall is also not typical fro him.

i just hope that he will find his mood until october.

Re: Trade "News"?
Bill Burt suggests Ken Griffey Jr. "I'm going out on the limb, going off the board (from my two previous posts) for this trade deadline exclusive. The Red Sox should get Ken Griffey Jr. I really believe he would be the missing ingredient, left-handed power behind Manny Ramirez and in front of Mike Lowell, both righties. Why Griffey over guys like Mark Teixeira, Paul Konerko or Jermaine Dye (he's my second choice)? Because of price and value."

Re: Trade "News"?
I've got another reason why Griffey over everyon else - because that man deserves a ring.

Of course, I think he'd cost too much.

Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Re: Trade "News"?
There's no way in hell J.D. Drew would ever hide an injury.

Re: Trade "News"?
Isn't there some void clause if he has the same shoulder injury that he's had in the past? I remember his signing being held up do to some contractual language...

I'd be shocked if the Sox made a big move
I'll never understand why some people want the Sox to re-make their team.  The fact is, through 103 games, Boston has the best record in baseball.  They've done this despite injuries to Schilling, Donnelly, and Papi.  Beckett has been on the DL once, and Youk has played hurt since June.

Sure some players have been disappointing (Drew and Lugo come to mind).  But that isn't a reason to blow up the team and start from scratch, or to gut the farm in order to bring in a superstar player.  As a "big market" team, the Sox can buy players in the off-season.  Right now, the only glaring need is a legit 4th OF or a good contact hitter off the bench.  Another arm would be nice, but only if it comes cheap.

The "disappointing" Sox offense is 4th in the AL in runs scored and 3rd in OPS.  In July, they are 3rd in runs (the Chisox are 2nd but have played two extra games), and 2nd in OPS.  Boston pitching has the best ERA in the AL and are 2nd in BAA.

This team isn't perfect (no team is), but it is the best in baseball right now.  There is no need for a big move.  Save the wish lists for the off-season.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Re: I'd be shocked if the Sox made a big move
No offense but, I'd say that your plan is the exact plan that lead to the Red Sox drought of nearly 80 years until 2004.  No thanks--been there, done that!

Re: I'd be shocked if the Sox made a big move
You're right.  The Red Sox ought to gut a successful team.  The FO should eat a bunch of contracts, empty the farm system, and try to assemble an all star team.  By the way, how's that working in the Bronx?

Look, the sky isn't falling.  The Red Sox are a very strong team.  There is very little of value out there and the available players are VERY overpriced.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Re: I'd be shocked if the Sox made a big move
In fact, isn't that how the curse started? We had a successful team and gutted it by giving away all our best players to the Yankees or whoever had enough cash to satisfy Harry Freakin' Frazee?

Yeah, that didn't work out to great for Red Sox Nation. Given what's available and for what prices, I don't want to see any big moves even if Manny, Papi, Beckett, Schilling, Tek, Lowell, Scrappy, and Youk suffer season ending injuries on August 1 (kind of like last year) or if it otherwise costs us the pennant this year. I'd rather have a team that will have the pieces to compete every year than give up the farm for some player who is likely to be only a marginal improvement on what we already have and will likely leave via free agency in the offseason anyway.

Re: I'd be shocked if the Sox made a big move
Of course, I'd still trade WMP for Chris Carpenter right now.
