Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Linkalicious: Humor? Edition.

  • First off, via Joy of Sox, Gammons has a great tidbit about "Being":
This is really true: When Manny Ramirez gets custom-made clothing at a chic Boston store, when the tailor embroiders Ramirez's monogram, instead of his actual initials, Manny has "MBM" sewn into his shirts and jackets. Yup. Manny Being Manny.
  • FJM is the best in the business. Which business? Don't ask me. Also, I'm kind of hoping A-Rod opts out and the whole thing drags on so that more gems like these will be available.
  • Beth and others try to suss out Beckett's f-bombs, among other utterances. Chances another one of his makes it on air?
  • Video of aforementioned F-bomb still available at Surviving Grady. The censors have made it SFW.
  • The Jon Lester for Mark Teixeira rumor is floated, nay, supported by none other than Chad Finn. This one isn't so much humor, but a series of questions.
  1. Would this cause us such reluctance were it not for the cancer?
  2. Would it cause reluctance anyway?
  3. Would you like to see this trade completed?
Fear not, for I'll do the cop out thing again and answer after you've already done so.

Re: Linkalicious: Humor? Edition.
Let's see: a promising young pitcher who showed he could pitch in the majors before the cancer flared up for a corner infielder who would probably be a one-year rental who may or may not reach Mike Lowell's power numbers and whose batting average will almost certainly be lower than Lowell's?

No thanks.

Re: Linkalicious: Humor? Edition.
Or you might say: a young pitcher who has shown some control problems and who has only pitched 81 innings in the majors...

...for an excellent young hitter, among the very best at his position in the league, with a career OPS+ of 128 (151 OPS+ so far this season) and who would massively counter-act Mike Lowell's second-half slump, and who would fill the greatest on-field position of need going forward. Deal with Boras? We've done it before and we'll do it again.

I can't see the FO letting Lester go for both the reason of believing in his talent and also for a willingness to do the right thing around his recovery from cancer. But I can see the paper logic in this trade proposal and at this remove I would probably do it.

Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.

My initials are MBM actually. I feel like I have a connection with Captain Jack now :)  j/k.

I love Lester...
...but I'd do Lester for Teixeira in a heartbeat. In a nano-heartbeat. Put Tex and his .974 OPS in the five-hole, move Youk to third, then Lowell goes... where? What contenders need a third baseman? The Dodgers? Padres? Angels?

Lester wouldn't be enough, though. I think we'd need another good prospect, probably a top 10 guy, and probably a pitcher, given The Rangers' deficiencies.

Or Lowell, Lester, and another prospect for Tex and Otsuka... drool.

Just my two cents. Keep the change.
