We have a Winner!

Earlier this month I started a contest to see who could guess Daisuke Matsuzaka's ERA at the end of May. The winner would receive a brand new pair of Red Sox Reebok shoes:

Well, May is over and we have a winner.

Dice-K's End of May ERA: 4.83
Winning Guess: 4.82

As you can see, the winner was just 0.01 off. That winner? None other than:

BritSoxFan.

It's funny. I read all the comments here at OTM and since the contest I haven't heard much talk about the shoes except from one person; Brit. What are the odds that he actually won?

I'm delighted, of course. But I like to think I'm a good enough fan that I would have been equally as happy with a sub-4 era and no shoes.

I don't think the Red Sox were expecting an ERA close to 5.00 when they forked over a bazillion dollars. They also probably weren't expecting him to lose to Paul Byrd, as this article mentions: http://www.thenewsroom.com/details/353194?c_id=bh

Matsuzaka in 07 = Beckett in 06?

That is, someone with fantastic stuff who is making the transition to a new tough league. Beckett showed flashes of brilliance last year, as has Matsuzaka this year. I have absolute faith that we'll see the ERA drop over the next season or so.

Wow, I really hope a pair of shoes makes up for paying $100 mil for an sub 100 ERA+ pitcher.

Yes, yes it does. These are the sacrifices that the Red Sox make to their loyal fans. Sometimes footwear is more important than your fancy so-called "statistics".
