Daily Dos(e), 3/30/07, The Home Stretch for the Road.

I'm all about triumphant and short-lived returns.

It's almost here. A scant 3 days until some official Red Sox baseball. Our team in Kansas City against the Kansas City Alex Gordons. The Kansas City Gil Meches.  The Kansas City Surely There's Been Stories About Other Players. No? Okay.

As SoxDevil points out the roster is set. Now whether we agree with its construction or not (seriously, 3 LHRPs?), it's done. Kind of a nice secure feeling knowing who the roster will consist of for the first couple of days anyway. The only moves I could forsee would be if Snyder wants a chance to start for a NL team who might desperately need him. (Nationals?)

Some news from other teams down the stretch.

  • Eric Gagne begins season on disabled list. Elsewhere: Grass grows and paint dries. Honestly. I wanted him too, but the man has become a health nightmare. This would've concerned me if we hadn't solved our closer problem already, since Otsuka might've been the easiest to acquire...
  • Kenny Rogers has a fatigued arm. Let this serve as a warning. Pine tar doesn't just give you more drop on your curveball. Just a note.
  • Reggie Sanders may be a Baltimore Oriole sometime soon. Not sure what sense this makes for the Orioles, to be honest. Sanders has certainly seen better days, and check out their depth chart. Essentially, Huff, Gibbons, Payton, Markakis, Millar, and Sanders would platoon among 1B, LF, RF, and DH. Sure Huff might see some ill-advised time at 3B, ditto for Payton in CF. The victim here would end up being Markakis, and the victim would then be Orioles fans, who would miss out on one of the truly bright young players on their team playing every day.
  • We're not getting Scot Shields. Not now, not ever. Is Shields worth $18M over 4?  Was Justin Speier worth $16M over 4? Maybe not, but I think Shields is definitely $2M better.
Newsworthyish.
Question, I've got a question.
Which non-Matsuzaka acquisition are you most excited to see on the field? Drew? Lugo? Okajima? the eventual inevitable callup of the illustrious Kevin Cash?

P.S. For a somewhat factual look at our opponent, click here. I missed some of the player positions by a bit (didn't think Gordon would make the team for opening day), but all in all it's a pretty poorly-formatted piece that reads like a 6th grade book report. Enjoy.

I look forward to seeing what Drew can do. It's been a couple years since we've had a legit #5 hitter.
Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Stuff
-ESPN reports The Gambler has a bloot clot in his left shoulder, and he'll be out until July.

-Detriot just extended Guillen for four more years

-Markakis will be the only one of those guys who doesn't lose playing time. He hit both righties and lefties adequately last year. That leaves 1B/DH/LF for Huff, Millar, Gibbons, Payton, and Sanders, with Huff occasionally playing third to give Mora a day off. Payton can/should sub for Patterson in center, who doesn't hit lefties. Sanders has a history of hitting lefties hard. The trade is perhaps not as odd as it appear at first glance.

-Few relievers are anywhere near as consistent as Scot Shields.

-We don't need three LHRPs. WTF.

I'm excited to see how Snyder does in a relief role, as well as Drew. I think people will like J.D. a lot more once they see what he can do.

Re: Stuff
I agree that Markakis shouldn't lose playing time, but the Orioles FO and coaching staff hasn't always been known for doing the right thing, especially recently. I suppose that could be said about most teams.

Re: Stuff
Nah, they haven't it's true. However, Markakis made a hell of an impression in the second half last year. They've got the incentive of finally having a home-grown outfielder built to last.

Re: Stuff
Completely agreed sir. My quibble is with the tendency of 90% of big league managers to go with the veteran when possible. Or at least the distinct possibility that Markakis will be "protected" from the tough LH pitchers in the AL if they pick up Sanders. And the one on his team might be the 2nd best in the league anyway.

Re: Stuff
Guillen's extension, by the way, if for 48 mil over four years, which seems pretty reasonable compared to some of the contracts doled out.

And yes, if Markakis is 'protected' anymore than he needs to be (everyone needs a day off every-so-often), they're doing things wrong. If Markakis proves he can't hit lefties down the road, then is when you platoon. Until then, start him every day.

I would think the O's'll go with something like this at the beginning of the year:

Vs. RHP

Roberts 2B
Mora 3B
Markakis RF
Tedaja SS
Huff LF
Hernandez C
Gibbons DH
Patterson CF
Millar 1B

It's against lefties where what to expect gets confusing. The top four, I'd imagine, will still in the line-up Hernandez figures to only get spelled against RHPs because Bako (the BC) is a lefty (not that Bako can hit anyone). Patterson will probably be platooned with Payton hitting against lefties.

Millar probably won't get in everyday, and I don't know how confident the Orioles are with Gibbons and Huff vs. lefties. Huff certainly has a history of handling lefties, but his bat is a little slower than before. Gibbons sometimes hits lefties and sometimes doesn't. Gomez has murdered lefties the last two years, but he's a 47 year old utility infielder...
