Tavarez?

Lots of off days in April, right?

Re: Your 2007 Boston Red Sox
haha, yup. The 5th starter isn't used much in April

From Bradford on Baseball
Kyle Snyder was justifiably happy in the clubhouse after batting practice, having made the team in a role that was described to him as a long-man type right now with the possibility of an alteration in the future. His first call went to his mom (Sandy) and dad (Don). While he is trying to put simply making the team all in perspective, he had to admit that because of the circumstances (one perceived spot on the staff entering spring training) this was among the top moments in his career.

Another noteworthy announcement was that top prospect Clay Buchholz will start for the Red Sox Thursday at City of Palms Park against Tampa Bay.

Re: From Bradford on Baseball
Good for Snyder. His performance this spring has definitely set him apart.

I'm just a little confused about Javier Lopez. Just a little...

Re: From Bradford on Baseball
Eh, it's really not that big of a deal considering he's gonna be sent down as soon as Timlin comes off the DL. Maybe considering this is why others got sent down instead so they don't waste time sitting on the bench considering they'd be going down to the minors within weeks

Re: From Bradford on Baseball
True. Lopez had good spring stats, so maybe they're hoping he picks up the slack if Romero fails

Re: From Bradford on Baseball
I wouldn't mind having three lefties in the pen when we face the Yanks in April, though I imagine Timlin will be back by then.
Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Snyder has no options
So, I think, Lopez will go down when Timlin returns.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Agreed. A boy can dream though.

Re: From Bradford on Baseball
Agreed re: 3 'pen lefties.  I've never seen a lineup with so many southpaws---the whole outfield, 1B and 2B, the DH and a switch-hitter at C....  Ridiculous.  We don't need a LOOGY, we need a LSOGY (Lefthanded Six-Out GuY).

Re: Your 2007 Boston Red Sox
I really dislike the choice of Lopez and Romero over Delcarmen. I'm hoping all these lefties are a sign of Francona turning into Mike Hargrove.

Re: Your 2007 Boston Red Sox
I think Manny D deserves a spot in the 'pen, also.

Here are the reasons why I think some guys in the 'pen got what they did:

Romero: Bad spring, but he has a proven track record.

Lopez: Great spring and is a lefty.

Delcarmen: Bad spring and is a righty

Corey: Great spring and is a righty

I think it's that simple. Corey had to be on the verge of making the team, I believe. If the Sox need some more relief help through April, Corey and Delcarmen should have their bags packed in Pawtucket.

Re: Your 2007 Boston Red Sox
Breslow too. I half-remember writing something about how he's basically a LHP who gets both RHH and LHH out at about the same level of effectiveness, which I think might've made him a better overall option than Lopez at this point, but oh well.

Re: Your 2007 Boston Red Sox
I like Breslow. I think he can be our situational lefty, but he's effective enough against righties to be called on for more than 1 out. However, we have Okajima, Romero, Lopez, and Breslow as LRP. That's a lot of competition. I'd only keep 2 lefties in the 'pen.

Re: Your 2007 Boston Red Sox
We're in complete agreement, actually. My point was that Breslow could be a better option than Lopez, given that Lopez and Romero may be useful only against LHH. I'd smack myself if I were proposing 4 LHPs in the pen, unless they were all Billy Wagner/B.J. Ryan clones.

That might end up Okajima's fate, as well (effective against LHH), though I think he and the Yanks' Igawa will enjoy at least a few months of baffling hitters just based on differences in delivery/approach alone.

Re: Your 2007 Boston Red Sox
The future of the bullpen probably looks something like:

Papelbon, Hansen, Delcarmen, Okajima, and Breslow/Corey. Snyder could be the long man... I'm not sure where he fits in long term, but he could start or relieve.

Hansen is starting to fall behind in his development. I hope he can pick up the slack, even if it means getting smacked around in AAA, and figure out how to pitch major league ball.
