Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The Daily Double. 9 February, 2007.

I changed the title.  I have the power.

Daily Reading.

Daily Question.

Should Lee Smith be in the HoF?
If you don't remember his career from experience (he did kick around forever though), check his b-r page and the top 100 profile.  This has become somewhat of a hot-button issue, because Lee Smith was never exactly dominant, but did hang around and save a lot of games.  Since I'm not making this a poll question, some rationale would be nice, though I assume you'll all tell me to shove it and just give a yes or no answer with no embellishment.

Re: Arroyo
Given the state of things, I actually think it's a good deal for the Reds.

As Arroyo continues to mature, I could see him becoming a crafty pitcher--A Maddux-lite, if you will. He has a nice, 12-to-6 curve, which seems to be devastating in Quad-A (NL).

Off-topic, need advice
Hey. I'm in a keeper fantasy league, and I'm having a hell of time figuring out my fifth keeper. Halladay, Webb, M. Cabrera and Howard are my first four. The fifth spot is between Papelbon and H. Ramirez, with Sabathia, Verlander and H. Kendricks also asking for attention. Papelbon is the sentimental choice, and he has a great upside (though he might be enough of a risk tht I could draft him again...). Hanley seems safer, and he'd round out my SB, though a sophmore slump isn't out of the question. I'm expecting Verlander to regress a little this year, and Sabathia is always a health risk. And I wouldn't be surprise if Kendricks hit .350, especially with half his games against the Rangers, Mariners and A's.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Re: Off-topic, need advice
Personally I'd go with Hanley, his best numbers were actually later in the season so he could easily put together an even better season then last year, and SS with good production are hard to come by (there's not many of them out there). Verlander actually finished the season pretty poorly (4-5 Aug-Oct, not counting Playoffs, with 6.82 ERA in Aug and 4.82 in Sept/Oct) which to me sends a warning flag (1. does he wear down in which case he'll struggle right when you need him, in your playoffs, 2. Was he experiencing some beginners luck the first couple months, not that I think it was a fluke, just maybe not as good as he seemed at first), and Paps I almost wanted to to pick, but in the end there more quality pitchers on the fantasy market then SS, and liek you said it's hard to predict just how well he's going to do

Re: Off-topic, need advice
Thanks, that's what I'm thinking too, I guess I just needed some re-assurance. I always get myself in fantasy trouble by being too sentimental about players. For example, in four years of playing, I have never owned a Yankee, just because I'd never want to be in the position of having to root for them in the real world.
Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Agreed on all points.

Re: Off-topic, need advice
Definately Ramirez. There's no gaurantee that Papelbon will dominate as a starter the way he did as a reliever. Besides, you havea  pretty good start to your rotation already. You'd be better off getting the SB's from the SS.

Re: Off-topic, need advice
Theres always a few surprise pitchers who come on every year and you can get off waivers if you are quick enough. Shortstops, not so much

Re: The Daily Double. 9 February, 2007.
I vote no for Smith. He racked up the saves, but like you said, he wasn't dominant. For a guy whose biggest claim to fame is a huge total in baseball's most overrated stat, he -has- to be dominant to get into the Hall. And Smith wasn't. He put up an ERA+ of 132 in 1289 IP. That's pretty good, but checking B-R, Spud Chandler had the same ERA+ in 200 more career innings. And who the hell is Spud Chandler? Just because Smith worked the last inning instead of the first 7 doesn't mean he gets into the Hall.

Re: MO!!!
i was thinking the same thing - tek vs. arod and pedro vs. zimmer. i also can't believe they left off fisk vs. munson, which is perhaps the most violent baseball fight i've seen.
Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Greg Harris
Oh, and by the way Allen, Greg Harris ranks in on the top 100 tomorrow. Are you going to post it or email it? Just double checking.

Re: The Daily Double. 9 February, 2007.
If Sutter got into the HoF, than Smith deserves it. However, the HoF has lost a lot of credibility with me. When I was six, I was convinced it was the end-all for listing the greatest players ever. Fourteen years later I can't say I agree with my six-year-old self.
KEEP MANNY!
