Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

DailyDos(e), 2/13/07

What I'm Thinking About Reading.

  • Top 100 Red Sox.  Brian was late yesterday - be sure to haze him mercilessly for it.  Jim Tabor.  Nickname: Rawhide.  That alone will make his bio worth the read.  Oh yeah.  Freddy Parent with some AMAZING error totals.
  • Joy of Sox always has this good stuff: Pictures of pitchers from yesterday.
  • John Donovan writes article...or something. On Nomar:
Still, Garciaparra appeared in just 122 games last season. Nomar, 33, needs to rediscover the secret to staying healthy or his Hall of Fame chances are in real jeopardy.
I'm pretty sure they will be in jeopardy either way.  It's disappointing, Nomar was and is one of my favorites.  But for the voters, he won't end up having one of those big numbers (i.e. 3,000 hits) he'd need for them to vote for him.
  • Kris Benson to miss season.  And thus: Steve Traschel will be an Oriole.  As far as I'm concerned?  Six to one, half dozen the other.  It's the right solution to the "problem", though I'm not sure how big a problem losing Kris Benson (dwindling peripherals) was in the first place.  That being said, best wishes to him in surgery and in recovery.
How many lights do you see?

So, we're in the enviable position of having three mid-20s potential aces on our hands.  We don't have to pick and choose.  Until now.  My question today is: Of Beckett, Papelbon, and Matsuzaka, who will have the brightest career/emerge as the ace of aces?  Why?

Lester will outshine them all. :) But if I have to pick one of those, I'll go with Paps.  Beckett has everything it takes, but can never seem to put it together.  I'm hopeful on Matsuzaka, but I'm also concerned that the number of innings he already has under his belt will lead to him wearing down in a few years.

Short Apology.
Just wanted to say sorry for the lack of original content the last few days: I've had three exams in the last week and one today, so I've been pretty busy.  Look for something that doesn't entirely involve snarky responses to links later today.

Re: DailyDos(e), 2/13/07
My answer?  Beckett.  I just have a feeling we're going to see a more than modest improvement this season, and I think he's got a bit more arrogance and drive to top the other two.  I agree with argo0 on the innings concern for Matsuzaka; I do believe that at LEAST he'll have a Hideo Nomo-type career (hopefully with more than two  seasons in a row being an above-average pitcher).

Re: DailyDos(e), 2/13/07
I pick Beckett too. He has been a World Series MVP, so unlike the other two has at least already hit the heights of being a MLB ace (albeit in a weaker league).

Re: DailyDos(e), 2/13/07
there's no question beckett has the talent, but i like papelbon's approach more, he seems more happy go lucky. it's too early to tell on matsuzaka, but i'm pretty sure he'll be pretty damn good. and i like lester too.

i keep thinking about the early 70s orioles, with the four 20 game winners.

question - what happens if/when lester is ready to start for the sox? does wakefield go to the pen? of course, injury to any one of the front five negates this, but i'm expecting good things from lester, and i'm curious what will happen.

Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Re: DailyDos(e), 2/13/07
If we are lucky enough for Wake/Schill/Paps/Beckett/Matsuzaka to all make 30 starts apiece, I would guess that Lester would just become a late-season callup, unless improved control and outstanding numbers at AAA make him absolutely impossible to ignore.  As they say, these kinds of problems have a way of sorting themselves out.

Re: DailyDos(e), 2/13/07
I think Matsuzaka will have the best season, but Papelbon will have the better overall career. Guy's a beast.

Re: DailyDos(e), 2/13/07
Wait - didn't Beckett have an ERA of nearly 5.00 last year?

(And by "nearly", I mean he was approaching it from the wrong side!)

Beckett was atrocious last year compared to his previous years.  At this point I'd be happy with an ERA less than 4.25 and 15+ wins.  And something much less than 1.58 HR/9 innings, thank you.

When everybody mentions all the potential of this rotation in a year or two, it kind of makes me think it's a little too good to be true.
