Ben Sheets? Red Sox? Can something/nothing happen please?

Sean McAdam:

"Yesterday, indications surfaced that the Sox have also had discussions with the Milwaukee Brewers regarding Ben Sheets. Sheets, 29, was 12-5 with a 3.82 ERA for the Brewers last year and has won in double figures in six of his seven seasons in the big leagues, but due to injuries hasn't made more than 24 starts in any of the last three seasons."

What say you? Interested? Not?

I could see this being the kind of deal Coco would be involved in, especially considering the issues this guy had last season both offensively and defensively.

What else might be required? No f'in clue.

Obviously, there's the easily voiced reservations about injury history, etc. And he did post a 1.238 WHIP in the NL Central.

Also, that Hank Steinbrenner is hilarious, no?

Oh. And, during the day today, try to find a Yankee fan who's obsessed with the idea that Beckett will be pushing like mad to re-negotiate his contract if the Sox trade for and sign Santana. ...it won't be difficult.

I don't think he would, and does he have the kind of body of work-leverage to make such a thing reality?

Re: Ben Sheets? Red Sox? Can something/nothing hap
Wake up people, i am interested to hear something on this.  It sounds good to me, but i think we need to hear a lot more as far as what it would take, just coco or what?

If it was Coco for Sheets straight up, and Ellsbury isn't on his way to the Twins, I'd make the deal. Otherwise, I just don't get it.

for sheets?  im not convinced sheets is worth anymore than coco, and end of the rotation pitching is not an area we're lacking in. Interesting, but i got serious doubts this guy would make it in the Al  east. If they gave up anymore than coco for just sheets i would probably be upset.

But maybe we could then spin him to a pitching starved team for our next catcher? Jeff Clement, Salty...
Manny Ramirez is a bad man

Sheets is in the NL Central, the same division where Piniero and Arroyo have been able to thrive.  The fact that he's a power pitcher can offset that somewhat, but all the same, I don't see him being any better than a #3 pitcher in the AL East.  And then there's the injury history.  I guess what I'm saying is that I don't see the sense in this other than to tell the Twins that we won't keep our offer on the table forever.  If not Santana, let's move on to Haren.

Beckett's contract
Allen, Peter Gammons wrote something on bspn the other day about Beckett's deal needing re-done if we get Johan. My concern isnt giving him a new deal right away, but would we really pay two pitchers 20 million per season if we get Santana, and in a few years when Beckett comes up?

Re: Beckett's contract
I agree with you there - It's definitely a concern.

However, I still think anyone who truly believes that both A) Josh would insist on restructuring his contract NOW and B) would actually have the leverage to do so, are well, out of their f'in gourds.

Re: Beckett's contract
I agree he may be a lil upset...but it wont matter. Im worried long term though.

Re: Beckett's contract
We wouldn't be paying 2 $20M(+) until 2011.

Sox have an option for Becks at $12M for 2010.

So, it'd be three years of Santana's extension (5 years, I think/hope) (he's signed for this year for a very reasonable price, IIRC).

In other words.

  1. both for relative peanuts.
  2. Becks: $10.5, Santana: $20
  3. Becks: $12, Santana: $20
  4. This is where it could get a bit crazy, but think of what the economics of MLB might be at this point. We could have guys like Carlos Silva and Kyle Lohse looking at $15M per by this point. So, Becks for $20 and Santana for $20 could look reasonable by this point, and it'd only be two (assuming EVERYTHING goes our way) for three seasons (2011-2013).

Sheets is a good #3 starter for the Sox
Sheets for Crisp and Bowden would be fine with me.
