Around SBN: Has Kentucky Improved Since the Non-Conference Season?

"No news is good news." No. It's frickin boring.

No Sox news, so some thoughts on moves being made elsewhere:

  • Former Rays' prospect, now a former Reds' CF. Josh Hamilton traded to the Rangers for Edison Volquez.
Good potential for win-win here. Jamey Newberg's analysis is excellent as always. A good example of teams matching up strengths and weaknesses in a trade.
  • Phillies sign Geoff Jenkins to a two-year deal for $13M.
Jenkins is 33 years old, plays good corner D, and has an .883 OPS lifetime vs. RHPs. This would be a pretty good move for the Phillies, cost, risk, and all, except for the fact that Geoff Jenkins is neither a starting nor relief pitcher.
  • Rockies sign Luis Vizcaino to a two-year deal for $7.5M.
Excellent quote from Dan O'Dowd here: "Luis provides valuable experience and durability to the back end of our bullpen,". If there's any manager who can prove RP durability, it's Joe Torre. Phillies and Tigers both miss out on another pitcher who could've been the second or third-best in their pen. Nice job, everyone. This is actually a kind of okay deal, all said and done.
  • Tigers extend Dontrelle Firestarter Willis for three years @ $29M.
Good or bad in terms of years and $, this was a rush job for no apparent reason. Mike Illitch isn't opposed to spending on players who are worth it, so Dave Dombrowski could certainly have waited until they knew that particular bit of information.
  • I don't know. What do you all want to talk about? J.D. Drew did, in fact, get postseason moment of the year.
  • Jon Weisman of Dodger Thoughts has ranked the AL rotations.
We're behind only the Angels. (He also ranked the NL rotations, all with the help of his Dodger Thoughts community.) Don't like his semi-arbitrary system? Can it. FJM already did it better.

Re: "No news is good news."
I don't know. Even if Willis is only good enough to be Detroit's fifth starter, that's less than $10 million a year for a guy who will throw over 200 innings. At the rate pitchers go for these days, he can even be a bit below league average and that would be a good deal for Detroit.

Re: "No news is good news."
That contract is going to look better and better each year, even if Willis is an average starter with a .500 record.

Re: "No news is good news."
And if he just needed a change of scenery to be good again?

If that happens, the Tigers got the biggest steal of the new century.

I don't like the rankings, they have Daisuke as an average pitcher, while I think he will definitly be above-average this year. If you make that change we become equal to the Angels. Than you factor in that Beckett is better than Lackey and Buchholz is better than any Angels pitching prospect...
