Hot Stove news

There are two big pieces of news today. Aaron Rowand signed a $60 million, 5 year contract with the San Francisco Giants. It's thought that Rowand will bat 5th in the Giants' order. Rowand is cashing in on a career year where he hit .309/.374/.515 with the Phillies over an impressive 161 games. For comparison, Rowand's career line is .286/.343/.462, making this appear to be an over-priced contract. Dave Roberts will likely move to left field, abandoned by a departing Barry Bonds.

The Rowand news isn't bad news for us. With Dave Roberts, Randy Winn, and several youngsters, the Giants didn't figure to be in on any of the CFs on the market, which means Coco could potentially get us a bit more in a trade if he goes. The implications for the AL East are that the Giants' interest in the Yankees' Hideki Matsui may be diminished. It will be interesting to see how that develops.

McCovey Chronicles on Rowand:

Second, the Baltimore Orioles have traded Miguel Tejada to the Houston Astros for outfielder Luke Scott, pitchers Matt Albers, Troy Patton and Dennis Sarfate, and 3B prospect Michael Costanzo. Tejada will become the 'Stros' starting SS when Adam Everett becomes an unrestricted free agent on Thursday. It will be interesting to see whether the Mitchell report will include Tejada's name and if there will be any serious repercussions. (In related news, the Mitchell Report is said to contain 50 names of active and former ballplayers.)

Personally, I would rather have re-signed Everett and moved the aging Miggy to 3B. Everett is perhaps one of the best defensive shortstops of all time based on new, defensive metrics, but is not known for his hitting.

I can't speak to the quality of prospects obtained by Baltimore, so there's a homework assignment for one of you out there on the Internets.

Re: Hot Stove news
Maybe the Astros will still move Tejada to 3B. After all, they just acquired Kaz Matsui and offered arbitration to Mark Loretta. Their only other option at 3B is Ty Wigginton, and he can play corner outfield, too.

Re: Hot Stove news
I heard the 'Stros want Tejada at short and are trying to move Adam Everett.  Everett is much better with the glove.  Maybe Houston's FO is hoping Miggy will give their line-up a B-12 shot.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Re: Hot Stove news
I'm sure Tejada would demand to be playing SS.

Re: Hot Stove news
But they also have Loretta and Matsui. I have to think given their abysmal lineup they'd want both of those guys playing rather than on the bench. The only way I can see that happening is if they move Tejada to third and Wigginton to the outfield.

Re: Hot Stove news
Interesting news on Rowand. I guess the 5/60 is the going market for an above-average center fielder.

The signing just makes me eagerly await the day when we KNOW who our CF is going to be...

Re: Hot Stove news
I think Rowand is overpaid based on one career year, but by 2009 or 2010 it'll look like a reasonable contract.

If you anticipate that Coco Crisp will be our starting CF next year you won't be disappointed.

Re: Hot Stove news
Considering the Hunter deal (5 X $18??!!) and the Jones deal (2 X $18??!!), and the Ichiro deal (5 X $18??!!), Rowand is a bargain. He's a better OBP guy than Hunter, has more power than Ichiro, and isn't a career national leaguer / K-machine like Jones.

I'd have thought Tejada might bring higher upside players, but maybe quantity will benefit the Orioles here. Unless I'm mistaken, aside from Bonds most of the power bats on the block have moved. All the Angels got was Hunter.

Re: Hot Stove news
Agreed. In a vacuum, the Rowand deal is a decent one, given what most people thought he'd command when FA started. That being said, the Giants are not an Aaron Rowand away from competing in the NL West, and they need to sort through all their 'young' (4th) OFs (Rajai Davis, Schierholtz(sp?)), figure out which ones could be league-average starters. Also, this is going to make them seem desperate in any talks they might have to unload Dave Roberts or Randy Winn.

Agreed on Tejada, as well. I'm curious as to whether there was an offer out there with higher-yield prospects, but it might've only been one or two.

Re: Hot Stove news
Maybe Baltimore is rolling the dice with quantity in the hopes that one of them turns out to be special.

Re: Hot Stove news
Probably.

I've always had a soft spot of the Orioles, but they definitely need a new look.  I'm hoping they trade away Bedard and Roberts as well, and start from scratch.  Maybe they'll be able to compete a few years down the road.

"That's one of the concepts behind, in this position, obtaining five players in exchange for one,'' Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said. "Nobody knows for certain how these young players are going to evolve, but if you get five you start playing the percentages, quite honestly.''

Scott, 29, hit .255 with 18 homers and 64 RBIs as Houston's regular rightfielder. Albers, a 24-year-old righty, went 4-11 with a 5.86 ERA.

Patton, a 22-year-old lefty, made his major-league debut this season. Sarfate, a 26-year-old righty, was 1-0 in seven relief appearances.

Costanzo, 24, was acquired from Philadelphia in the deal that also brought Bourn. He hit 27 home runs in Class AA this season. The Orioles will assign him to the minors.

Re: Hot Stove news
The Giants aren't close to competing, but Rowand's signed to such a favorable contract that he's not eating up tons of payroll. Moreover, he'd be great value if the Giants decided to trade him. (According to the San Jose Mercury News, he has full no-trade in 08, and partial thereafter.) Having just taken the last marquee CF off the market, the team could now trade some of their OF depth. The Braves, Rangers, and Twins are down CFs.

I could see the Giants competing in a few years. They have strong young pitching in Cain, Lowry, and Lincecum, but need to rebuild the line-up, which is about 1000 years old. Considering the overall weakness of the NL, they'd be able to vie for the wild card in three or four years, with a little luck and some wise trades / signings.

Re: Hot Stove news
But they have a terrible farm system, with no positional prospects. Granted this is a year old, but they have three propsects there - Lincecum, Jonathan Sanchez and a 16 year old 3B prospect. They're a long way off. If I were them, I'd trade Cain or Lincecum for some young positional talent.

I'd keep Lincecum and trade one of the other guys.

Re: Hot Stove news
Linceum probably has better stuff and a higher ceiling, but I've heard concerns about his delivery and frame, and his ability to last as a starter. It's a tough call, but Cain might be a safer bet, versus the higher risk/reward of Lincecum.

But either one should fetch a nice group of kids. Maybe Carlos Gomez et al, or Evan Longoria (imagine Kazmir, Lincecum, Garza, Price, and Shields - shudder) or some Rangers, Angles, or Dodgers kids.

Re: Hot Stove news
TB could piece together a really nice rotation in just one offseason. That'd be impressive.

Re: Hot Stove news
Rowand signing with the Giants keeps Linecum from being traded to the Jays, which I love.  Jays could of had an amazing pitching rotation if you add T. Linecum to that group.

Re: Hot Stove news
I don't think Rios would've been enough. At least, I wouldn't have made that deal.

And the Lincecum for Matsui rumors were laughable, IMHO.
