Bye bye Mike Mike??

Time is winding down on the Sox' exclusive bargaining period with Mike Lowell.

It doesn't mean Lowell is 100 percent gone if the sides can't reach an agreement in the next few hours, but it certainly gives Lowell and the Sox a chance to seek a free-agent deal with another team and/or player.

Both sides know the approximate market. If they haven't had a meeting of the minds yet, I imagine they won't be able to once the four- and five-year offers start rolling in.

I still have a faint hope that this diary will be obsolete by the time I hit publish, or that I'll wake up tomorrow and read about a new contract. But I'm trying to get used to the idea of a new third baseman.

I hope not
There isn't much out there, and Lowell is a good fit on this team.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
In other news, Posada re-signed for 4yr/52mil. Although that will help the next season in the end it will most likely become a burden.

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
I think he'll still be a pretty good DH at 40. I was hoping he'd go to the Mets.

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
I was just hoping he'd reach the open market so that the Mets could drive the Yankees to an even larger burden of a contract.

Though I think you're right. He will probably be a decent DH at 40.

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
oh well. If lowell doesnt sign before the deadline i think hes gone. To give this guy a 4-5 year contract based on one good year would be foolish. So it was alot of fun to see lowell go from "beckett trade throw in" to "world series mvp"...but i think its time to say goodbye.

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
"Beckett trade throw in" or "Beckett trade eat some of our salary bill please!". One of the reasons why anything and everything we've had out of Lowell has been a bonus, and a massive one at that.

Sentimentality aside, 3 years is still one more than we should give him, but it's a fair deal. As I said before if he gets $70/5yrs then good luck to him and thanks for the memories. 2007 was Mike's year - I don't think we'll ever see him have as good a year again (in the AL at least).

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
Nope. Looks like the Yanks may be getting A-Rod back. If they do, Mike is ours.

Hope you're right.

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
Which means that the Dodgers could suddenly enter the Lowell Sweepstakes....

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
I agree, but it makes no sense to me. Why go four years, $60 million on Lowell when you have Andy Laroche waiting in the wings? In order to become serious contenders, the Dodgers need a lot more than Mike Lowell. They need to develop their core of young guys and augment that core with FA. Blocking their Kemps and Loneys and Laroches with guys like Luis Gonzalez, Nomar and Lowell is counterproductive.

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
Fair point - I was thinking more along the lines of what input Torre might have.  Apparently, there's nothing from LAD about Lowell, so it would appear that they're standing pat.

Give him 4 years
Just do it, Theo.  Give him four years.

Come on.  This is silly.

He is worth it.  For his defense, for his batting average, for his doubles, for his clubhouse leadership, and especially for his clutch hitting, especially during the playoffs.  Players like this are rare.

Give him four years.

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
It's over. 4 Other teams have offered 4 years, 55-60 million.

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
Just a rumor, two of the supposed 4 have already denied the rumor (St Louis and the Braves, who laughed at the rumor considering they already have Chipper Jones at 3B...yeah he's pretty good)

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
remember that Boras is Lowells client, who is notorious for leaking supposed offers that are complete BS

Boras
... isn't Lowell's agent.  I believe Lowell and Posada have the same agents: the Levinson brothers.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Re: Boras
That is correct.  Mikey's agents are the Levinsons.

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
Unless we have some deal waiting in the wings I think Theo has to bite the bullet and just give Lowell that fourth year.

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
Agreed.  Lowell just costs money.  Any other deal will cost players and money.

Re: Bye bye Mike Mike??
I don't know, i think we can get him for 3.

The Yanks are apparently not interested anymore.
Atlanta already has Chipper.
LAD would be stupid to sign him for 4 years as it would block their prospects.
The Angels might go after him, but where will Figgins play?

I think the Sox will get him for 3 years, and then we can focus our attention on trading Coco
