Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!

Not the type of medical help the ailing Angels were looking for.

Let's be honest kids. In a game that was clearly a battle of wits and cojones with Dr. Curtly, is there any chance someone with the last name Weaver could've won? No? Good, we're agreed then. Say what you will about the man's politics or decisions to speak sometimes, but he's absolutely balls-out in these situations.

While Schill was doing his thing, Papi and "Being" did theirs: hitting HRs. They put up back-to-back jacks in the 4th inning to give the Sox a 2-0 lead that they'd never relinquish.

After Schilling left in the 7th, the Sox decided to provide some cushion for the 'pen. A Lugo BB, DP 2B, Youks SF, Papi 1B, "Being" BB (replaced by Yagoboy), Lowell 2B, Drew FC, 'Tek 2B, Crisp 1B later, the game had been broken open to a 9-0 score.

Eric Gagne came in to finish off the game, and proved why he's such a trusted man for those 9-run leads. 9-1 Final, and your Red Sox will begin the ALCS at Fenway on Friday.

Oh what. Do you want a celebration photo or something?

Re: Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!
To be fair, they are going to be the only baseball to cover over the next few days. Makes sense to put them first since stories/interest in the Sox will be low on their site/network until Wednesday or Thursday.

I guess Torre has at least one more night... hahah
The Yanks had to go and wreck everything by not losing...

Psh...disgraceful.

Torre.
Hehe. I love that whole thing with Torre. To me, I'm not sure why he'd stick around much longer if this team doesn't perform anyway. He's accomplished a lot, and gets a lot of deserved and undeserved flak on a daily basis. The impact of managers on wins and losses is vastly overrated and Joe Torre is not an exception to that rule.

What'll be really disgusting is all the stories tomorrow about how Steinbrenner motivated Torre and the Yankees. How about saying that the Yankees were able to hit well against a non-Sabathia/Carmona pitcher, at home, with their young almost/possible ace pitching some great innings in relief to secure the win? Not as sensational, but at least it's true.

...............

Sooner than you think.   ESPN's "experts" are already troweling out that bovine excrement.

Re: Torre.
Yikes. Absolutely unbelievable. Anyone who didn't think the Yankees would hit Westbrook pretty well at Yankee Stadium, even after the Game 1 and Game 2 lack of offense, should probably get their heads checked. I was just hoping that Clemens would be as awful as he was and not give way as soon as he did to another pitcher.

Re: Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!
And I see that Mussina's going to be pitching Game 4, and not Wang as originally stated.

Hmmm....

Re: Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!
Or at least I'd read / seen this evening that Wang was going to start tomorrow... thought sure I'd seen that.

Anyway, Mussina's turn... and if the MFY win that, THEN perhaps Wang will return to the scene of his crime (12-3 loss in Game 1)

Pitching Changes... Again...
This morning I see that Wang is indeed going to start tonight, and not Mussina.

Wang, as you'll recall, had a disastrous start in Game 1, the 12-3 loss.

I wonder why Mussina's not getting the ball?

Re: Pitching Changes... Again...
Wang is pitching an important game because he is better than Mussina.  Short rest shouldn't hurt a sinkerball pitcher, and Wang is much better at home.  He sucks on the road.
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

Re: Pitching Changes... Again...
If I'm a Yankee fan, the only thing I'm concerned about re: Wang is drop in velocity. That sinker is a lot more imposing at 97-98 (or whatever it is) then it would be 4-6 MPH slower.

In addition, fatigue generally causes a pitcher to miss "up", which I think could hurt a sinkerball pitcher significantly. I guess the question there is whether he ends up entering the game already somewhat fatigued due to short rest.

Definitely better than Mussina though.

Re: Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!
Hey...I now want that series to go 5...both teams use up their starters and their bullpen...I just hope the Yankees lose.  Anyone notice how the idiots on TBS outright had hard ons for the Yankees.  Every time they would get a hit...the retard would say, "here they come". God, just get them out now.

Re: Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!
cblez.

Yeah... I noticed that.  Hah.  They were a bit too excited.

Re: Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!
Can't blame them really, think of how much dough TBS is losing due to the fact that all the other series were sweeps ... TBS is definitely pulling for the Yanks to make this a 5-gamer ...

Re: Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!
TBS had a pitching stat comparison up today, and Clemens' picture looked like the living dead.

I don't know if anyone else saw it...

He was pale white, and rather, well, disgusting.
Sunken eyes and everything.
He looked even worse compared to his lively looking counterpart.

He should definitely be paid some ungodly amount of money for next year.
Because he's THAT amazing.

Tee hee.

Re: Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!
I said it before and I'll say it again: I think the Yankees should pay Clemens $40 million to pitch next year. It's an absolute travesty that the best pitcher in the game 10 years ago doesn't have the biggest contract in baseball today, and Georgie Boy should rectify that immediately!

Re: Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!
On a completely unrelated note, why is no team looking into signing Albert Belle for like $35m/yr? Guy was the most dominant hitter in the league...in the 90s.

Re: Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!
Credit to Scioscia for not playing the injury card.
Bottom 9th B:1 S:0 O:0 With Bill Mueller batting, Dave Roberts steals (1) 2nd base.

Re: Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!
Absolutely. I think the "loss" of GMJ was probably overstated by the media given his overrated D and his 98 OPS+ on the season, and I'm not sure Bartolo Colon would've been of any help to them anyway, but everything else (Kotchman today, Vlad being hurt even before MDC hit him, Anderson/conjunctivitis, a clearly not-100% Juan Rivera) were significant hits to this team. Not sure that would've swung the pendulum in their direction, but it would've been a much more complicated series than it turned out to be.

Re: Game Story: Sox Sweep Angels!
This is completely irrelevant but ya gotta love that poncho. Well I do, I own one...and proudly wear it to rainy games. If I had bought more, I could most definitely have made money off of them this may. It was rather rainy.
