Petition to re-sign Mike Lowell
Petitions can do anything these days. It's the 90s, you know? The latest petition is targeted towards Red Sox ownership to re-sign World Series MVP Mike Lowell. I don't know if it's worth the time, but it's worth a shot right?
Red Sox Nation could not see our beloved Fenway Park's third base occupied by anybody else but Mike Lowell. We urge you to re-sign Mike Lowell and the process of doing so your top priority this off-season.
Dan Lamothe has a similiar take as I do. I don't think a petition will effect Theo & Co. because I don't really think it'll be up to them. It'll be up to Lowell himself who will choose between being in Boston or making a lot more money somewhere else. Red Sox ownership knows how much Red Sox Nation loves Lowell, so a petition won't add much to the debate.

Re: Petition to re-sign Mike Lowell
A: Probably!
Thinking of history a bit - We've had a great run from Lowell who, if we're honest, we took on the basis that Beckett was a must have. At the time Lowell was perceived (IIRC) as not being able to catch up to a decent fastball - slow hands at the plate.
He's just had a career year, and far from us mopping up his salary, he's been a key contributor consistently throughout the season. The Red Sox 3-4-5 (when healthy) has been the most feared line-up in baseball. And that then allows us to bat Youk/DP in front of those guys. And his defence has remained to(wards?) GG standard.
Lowell is now 2 years older than when we acquired him, and giving him 4/5 more years seems too much to me. I'd rather pay more for fewer years ($30m/2 years) than less for more ($52m/4 years). The balance might be around $42m/3 years but it's then up to Mike. I think someone, somewhere, will offer $56m/4 years or maybe even $70m/5 years.
The question for the FO is whether Lowell is the mainstay at 3rd base for the future. It's a tough question and the FO has made mistakes (Wily-Mo, Renterror) in the past. But they've also made some good decisions (Pedro, Damon). This is where they have to earn their money.

Re: Petition to re-sign Mike Lowell
Taking a look at the Sox' potential line-up next year, it's still excellent if you move Youk down to #5:
- Ellsbury (hopefully)
- Pedroia
- Ortiz
- Manny
- Youk
Defensively, Youk isn't Mike Lowell at 3B, but will probably be superior by the end of any contract Mike signs this off-season.

dito
but i do not think that Lowell wants to make that deal.
so if he goes for the big money, let him go (no problem with that, i wish him all the best).
i would like to see Youk on third where he will be a good fielder with good production (we will have that position settled for quite some years) and we get something for 1B.
we got Carter through the WMP deal and he might be ready for next year (let's see winterball).
for the future we have some prospects (i have much hope for Anderson!) for 1B so Carter (or whomever we will get for 1B) has to hold that position for 2-3 years only.
we are in a very good position right now because of the versatility of Youk.
Youk will be just fine at third and we will save a lot of money for other things might come up(named Santana, Kazmir or Hamels:).

Re: Petition to re-sign Mike Lowell
Despite that latter problem, because Youk is a more than adequate 3B, the Sox ought to go for the best corner infielder they can get, even if it means sending Youk back to third. But after A-Rod and Lowell, the next best corner infielder in free agency is probably Sean Casey. Personally, given a choice between A-Rod's $50M/year contract, Lowell's all-around excellence, and Casey, my choice would be Lowell -- but is Lowell worth a four or five year contract? I'm not sure he is.
