Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

GT: WS Game III, Dice-BB vs. "The Dragon Slayer".

Let the good times roll.

Jack Dempsey/AP

  • Story giving background of Josh Fogg being named the Dragon Slayer. Warning: Story uses 'Mike Mussina' as support for the idea.
  • Btw, this is early, I know it's VERY early. I work all day. Boo work. Hooray Beer! (Y'know, only if you're old enough people)
  • Lineups aren't posted, but given this I'll take a guess. (at the end)
  • There's a mini (non) controversy brewing with this whole "should the NL adopt the DH?". Not sure how I feel about it. I think some people have come off pretty arrogant suggesting the NL needs to change it. I'd like them to, because it would help us, but otherwise I can't get too pumped for either side of this issue.
  • I've seen all kinds of permutations of the IF and OF suggested, but I'm guessing playing (Youks in RF/Lowell or PedRoYa at SS/Papi in CF/etc.) were probably never seriously discussed by those whose input matters. (i.e. Me.) If PedRoYa had played at least, say, 10-15 games at SS this season, THAT option might've been kicked around. As it is, it probably wasn't.
  • That's it. Hopefully it'll be busy very early at work and I can sneak out of there to watch the last couple innings with all of you. Go Sox!
  • My lineup guess: 1. Tacoby, 2. PedRoYa, 3. Papi, 4. "Being", 5. Lowell, 6. Drew, 7. Tek, 8. Lugo, 9. Dice-BB
[Update, NHRedsox] Rox Lineup

1. Kazuo Matsui, 2B

4. Todd Helton, 1B
5. Garrett Atkins, 3B

7. Yorvit Torrealba, C
8. Cory Sullivan, CF

Lineup.
Btw, I still wouldn't be too upset to see this instead of what I think will happen.

Drew, DP, Papi, "Being", Lowell, Tek, Tacoby, Lugo, Dice

Keep the pressure low(ell) on the Bellsbury.

Also, if someone'll post the lineups in the comments when they're available (or in the post, for those who can), that'd be great.

Tokyo is similar to Boston, with respect to it's altitude above sea level.   Tokyo is just 59 feet.

Osaka is 49 feet.

I'd heard that they sent Dice-KKKKKKKKKKK out to Denver a day early; anyone else heard that ?

GT=Game Thread

My good omen for the night. I had dinner at a sushi bar wearing my Sox hat. Japanese guys at a table next to me lean over and say "You like Red Sox? We like Red Sox." then go back to speaking amongst themselves (all I could over hear was what I thought was Dice-K's name, it sounded good)

Then one of them did "Fat Bottom Girls" on karaoke. All in all it seemed promising. :)

Lets rock Game 3.

Coors Field also has mics into the stands.   I know this from having spent some time in the KOA Radio booth.

Coors Field sounds this loud when there's 20,000 fans.

And let's face it:  51,000 fans are quite capable of making lots more noise than 35,000.

It's a bad call. It's clear the ump called Manny out only after Torrealba got up and tagged him. That means he saw Torrealba miss the tag when Manny slid into home -- and he clearly did touch home.

It's a bad call.

He clearly wasn't waiting to see if Torrealba had the ball. He could see Torrealba had the ball -- he only called Manny out after Torrealba got up and tagged him, and he made the call immediately at that point.

Yep.  And see that Torreabla gets up with the ball in his hand, apart from the glove - and immediately applies a tag after Manny's standing up.

BAD CALL, UMP.  Shoulda moved to your right to get the proper angle, and you'd have seen the missed tag.

That's no kidding.  The original plan for Coors Field called for 60,000 seats.  They "settled" on 51,000, wanting that "ballpark" feel.   Snort.

They haven't come close to putting that many butts in the seats all season - for any season - on a regular basis, and only in the last 2 weeks did attendance get near capacity.

Wait, are we
discussing whether the Ump did the right thing given what he could see, or whether Manny actually got to the plate without getting tagged? If it's the former, you're arguing that "hey! The Ump should have given us that call, even if it would have been erroneous!" If it's the latter, the camera showed the glove hit Manny before he got to the plate. Either way, I see no reason to bitch about that call at this point. Especially when we're up 6-0.
this is not my dot com (okay, maybe it is.)

by dmauer on Oct 27, 2007 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Wait, are we
I'm arguing the ump blew the call. In his own words, if Manny had touched the plate, he would have been safe, and Manny did touch the plate. If there was a replay that showed Manny did get tagged before he touched the plate, I didn't see it, but given the ump's angle -- which, admittedly, was the wrong angle to take -- there's no excuse for him not seeing Manny touch the plate because that was in plain view right in front of him. Therefore, it's a blown call.

And 6-0 is hardly a safe lead in Denver.

I tremendously dislike him; he always seems to talk & write chit about the Sox. That last inning conversation about Lowell annoyed me. Maybe I am a hypersensitive Sox fan but it was as if they are hoping the "Lowell signing elsewhere" scenario comes true.

Agreed, though I think that's a foregone conclusion at this point. He'll get bigger and longer offers than the Sox are going to give him, and it's probably his last chance to really cash in.

Re: GT: WS Game III
I don't understand why Drew would be running there. Two strikes on the batter with one out and no need to run? With the kind of season he and Lugo both had, that's just begging for a double play.

Re: Lugo
And as I kept pointing out the entire second half, he was incredibly unlucky in the first half, with a BABIP of around .200. He hit .280 after the all-star break and finished with a BABIP of .265 on the season, about 50 points below his career average. Had he hit all year as he did in the second half, no one would be complaining. Had his BABIP for the season matched his career average, no one would be complaining.

He'll be better next year.

Ok, here's the plan:

Papi stays in the game for now. Assuming Dice-K shuts down the Rockies in the sixth, Youk pinch hits for Drew in the seventh and stays in the game to play first, with Coco replacing Papi in the lineup.

Ortiz
with another K. I hate to agree with McStupid and Buck, but why not bring in Youk now? There's likely only 1 or 2 at most ABs. You don't lose much in hitting, and you gain a lot of defense to hold the win with the bullpen coming in soon.

by sdkramer.otm on Oct 27, 2007 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

Re: Ortiz
Because the Rockies could still score a bunch of runs in the sixth.

My plan is better -- keep him in for now, and assuming Dice-K gets through the sixth with no damage, have Youk pinch hit for Drew in the seventh and bring in Coco in Papi's spot in the order.

Remember the 1996 Series? The Braves won the first two games and had the lead until Mark Wohlers forgot that the object of the game as a pitcher is to keep the other team from hitting the ball over the fence.

I sometimes think that had he not grooved a grand slam ball to Jim Leyritz that the MFY never would have won their four World Series in five years.
