Coco Crisp Trade Options [Promoted Diary]

Now that Ellsbury has shown he is ready to play in the show, it is time to talk about what to do with coco. He is not going to want to be a reserve outfielder and he is to good to be one. The question is what is his value at this point? After a terrible year last year and a bounce back year this year it is hard to say what we could get for him. He is a good bat with excellent defense and is relatively cheap.
Any ideas?

Re: Coco Crisp Trade Options
Coco's my personal sentimental favorite Red Soxk, but it does not look like he'll be in Boston for all of next year.  I'm still predicting he (along with Drew and Mr. Matsu) will have a better season next year, but I don't see him having a lot of trade value right now and I'm worried the Sox are going to get hosed with a coupla nothing prospects and Coco will go on to hit .300 with a .360 OBP and thirty steals for somebody else.

Re: Coco Crisp Trade Options
I wont be too bothered if coco goes on to be succesful somewhere else long as we still have a healthy ellsbury.

"a bounce back year this year"
Really? Yes, he was stellar in CF, but a .268 avg., a .330 OBP and a .712 OPS are pretty disappointing.

I imagine we can get something decent for him, though probably not "fair value." Though the clearing the way for Ellsbury is value in and of itself.

There'll be a big turnover of CFs this year, so it's probably too early speculate who specifically would be a good trading partner.

Re: "a bounce back year this year"
true, but you'd have to think the Twins and/or the Braves will be in the market for a cheap CF.

Maybe
FA CFs, off the top of my head -

Hunter
Jones
Cameron
Rowand

I could see the Braves in play for either Rowand or Cameron. I've also heard rumors about the Yanks making an offer for Santana based around Melky, Wang and Kennedy (though I'd think the Twins would want Hughes or Joba...).

If Rowand does leave, maybe the Phils would make a good match? Or is Victorino a CF?

I'll think harder about all this once the Sox win in 5.

Re: Maybe
How about Coco and Drew to Colorado for Helton, and we sign Hunter or Rowand?

I don't know that I'm crazy about that solution, but it would give us an excellent outfield and fill our gap at corner infield, with Youk going to third. I think I'd prefer to keep Youk at first, but Lowell is the best 3B on the market, and he seems set on leaving unless he gets a long-term deal.

Re: Maybe
If we could jettison Drew and Coco for anyone, I'd be thrilled.  I can't see CO doing it, because they've already got Holliday and Hawpe in the corners and in CF Tavarez is similar-ish to Coco at the plate, if not on defense.

Re: Maybe
Agreed.

Helton is good, no doubting that.  But he's a big fish in a small pond, and he's also no kid anymore.

Holladay's young, but he'd come with an expensive price tag, especially if he wins the MVP (which he probably will).

Re: Maybe
And another thing with Holliday is that he's not the best outfielder in the league...

Re: Coco Crisp Trade Options [Promoted Diary]
i doubt we'll end up getting more than B prospects + cash (if we end up trading him that is)

Re: Coco Crisp Trade Options [Promoted Diary]
I'm not so sure. He is on a very good contract and has been amazing in the outfield this year.

Re: Coco Crisp Trade Options [Promoted Diary]
I say we just keep him as a 4th OF. If hes willing to do so.

Re: Coco Crisp Trade Options [Promoted Diary]
Also, w/ Hinske's contract coming up...anyones else willing to give a small contract to Corie Coskie? (One year incentive laden.

Also, I predict Lowell to Philly 5 year deal. And we make a trade for Dunn who will play 1B and move Youk to 3rd. Crisp to Cinci, along with Hansen and Tavarez after we pick up the latter's option? Would that be enough?

Re: Coco Crisp Trade Options [Promoted Diary]
I don't think that's enough for Dunn. Actually, I don't want Dunn at all. Hell of a hitter, yes, but an absolute butcher in the field. He should be a DH somewhere. Minnesota?

Re: Coco Crisp Trade Options [Promoted Diary]
Forget trading, for reasons mentioned above. Also, remember that our starting outfield includes a rookie and two guys -- Manny and Drew -- who are susceptible to injuries. Then add in Francona's nature of resting guys pretty regularly.

What it all adds up to is, if Coco will play 4th OF, he'll probably get 400 ABs easily and be a significant contributor. And the team will be better off with him.

If his hitting improves, he can have LF when Manny eventually goes (2009), at least for a while.

Re: Coco Crisp Trade Options [Promoted Diary]
I think we have to be careful not to overvalue him from an offensive standpoint. Most likely, he'll end up on an NL team that needs cheapish guaranteed GG defense with a speed bonus.

Re: Coco Crisp Trade Options [Promoted Diary]
Many teams are looking for CF's this off season.  The Padres come to mind first.  Its not likely they will re-sign Cameron.  Padres have a decent farm system and a few quality pitching prospects.

Coco has basically stated he is gone.  This is one of those occasions in sports where the team and player are in agreement.  He is an everyday CF and Ellsbury is the future.  No hard feelings, its better to move him ASAP, avoid the potential media problems, make a fair trade (like the Willy Mo trade) and each side move on.

Hopefully Coco will have a ring and this move will be similar to Pedro leaving, meaning both sides feelings were not hurt.

Also, I keep reading Oakland wants to deal Haren before he bolts for free agency.  Red Sox should jump on that with a Coco package, you know with other prospects as well.

Re: Coco Crisp Trade Options [Promoted Diary]
Coco would be a real nice fit in SD - he's very Cameronesque. If they could get a bullpen arm back, that would be great. I think Coco would benefit from being in the NL but he's three years removed from his last good offensive season so the Sox will need to check their expectations.

San Diego
I imagine the Padres want more of a bat in CF. I could see them going for Hunter, Jones or Rowand.

Whatever happens, somebody needs to make room for ellsbury, and coco is the most tradeable of the three OFs
