ALDS Roster Announced.

...earlier this afternoon, via Extra Bases.

  • Pitchers (10):
Becks, Dice-BB, Schill, Lester, Paps, Gagne, Oki, Timlin, MDC, J-Lo
  • Catchers (3):
    'Tek, Belli, Cash
  • Infielders (6):
Youks, PedRoYa, Lugo, Lowell, Cora, Hinske (may also serve as OF and horrible PH option)
  • Outfielders (5):
    Crisp, Drew, "Being", Yagoboy, Kielty
  • Players who led the AL in OBP (1):
    Papi
More is going to be made of leaving Wake off the roster than should be. Maybe I'm the only one, but if ([censored] forbid) one of our starters got injured, I'm more confident in Lester lately than I am in Wake. And if we're down by a lot for some reason in a game and want to preserve that day's starter, it really doesn't matter who does the cleanup.

If having three catchers seems redundant and unneccessary (especially with no knuckler), well, then, welcome to the world. Neither Belli nor Cash should see a start with all the days of rest. Consider this a vote of confidence in Belli's offensive "abilities" (Cash, afaik, is completely healthy) and also concern that Belli is not 100%.

Nickname suggestion, let me know what you think in the comments. Bobby Kielty was known as Ronnie Mac in Oakland due to his long and striking red hair, resembling Ronald McDonald. I say we call him B.K., both a reference to his initials and to Burger King. We could have that creepy guy from the commercials follow him around the dugout and clubhouse. This could really work.

Re: ALDS Roster Announced.
I agree with leaving Wake off the roster, if he's hurting.

You can only bring 25, and only the able-bodied should go.

Wake did well against LAA in April, getting his first win of the season.  More recently, though, he got pounded by them in August, giving up 7 hits, and 6 runs in just 4 innings.

This is a short series.  Let him sit and rest up for the ALCS.

The three catchers makes me worry that Tek may not be completely healthy ...

Re: ALDS Roster Announced.
I'm hoping the only possible conspiracy-type theory that might work on this issue is that they might be more inclined to PH or PR for him given the right situations. I mean, if he gets on in the 7th inning of a game, I don't want them to be reluctant to PR Ellsbury or Cora for him simply because they'd be worried about Belli coming in and getting/still being hurt.

Really? Crisp is going to start in the playoffs? Are you joking?

Re: ALDS Roster Announced.
I never said he was, though I'm sure he will be. Even if he's not, I think it's at least as likely we see a "Being"-Drew-Kielty OF as we see a "Being"-Yagoboy-Drew OF.

Re: ALDS Roster Announced.
BP Depth chart for this crew:

Paps
Oki
MDC
Timlin
J-Lo (if against RHHs)
Lester
Hinske
Cash
Goon #3 from Goodfellas
Eric Gagne
J-Lo (if against LHHs)

Thoughts? Flip Hinske and Cash?

Heh.
Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Re: ALDS Roster Announced.
Crisp will start, his defense makes a big difference at home.  They had to bring in Cash as he was the only non-pitcher they could add to the roster.

Re: ALDS Roster Announced.
Absolutely Crisp will start. It's the only call, I think.

brit is correct. Anyone hoping for Yagoboy to start in CF is hoping that Coco has his infection problems continue.

Really? There were no other non-pitchers on the 40 man roster as of August 1st?

Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Nickname for Kielty
How about [Howard Stern staffer] "Richard Christy", because they look very much alike...

What would Dogbert do?

Re: Nickname for Kielty
When I was in HS my coach's initials were B.K. and we took to calling him "The Broiler" as in "The B.K. Broiler".  Whenever I see those initials that's what I always think of.

What else can you call Bobby K apart from The Senator?

Re: ALDS Roster Announced.
Yagoboy?  I had to search the site to make sure this meant Ellsbury.

No, the Sox don't need 3 catchers.  Surely they'd be better off with either another pitcher (Buchholz?) or non-catching position player.

No, the Sox don't need Wake for this series, so they might as well keep him off the roster, esp. given the cortisone shot.  It's only a 5-game series, and they have enough off days that the only way they would be in trouble would be if Beckett and Dice-K got into a bloody knife fight or something like that .

Wait...
What the heck happens if the 3:00 game goes past 6:00? Do we just not see the Sox until they are over?

Re: Wait...
From what I've read, if one game runs long then they won't delay the start time of the next game but they will instead just begin the broadcast of the new game on TNT, then switch back over to TBS once the earlier game finishes.  Naturally this is a nightmare for people hoping to record the games.  Being that I'm on the west coast and will be at work until the game is over, I'm having to use my DVR on one TV recording for two hours on TNT starting at 6:30 EST just in case the other game runs long, and I'm recording on TBS on my other TV with my Tivo.  What an awful scheduling idea by MLB.

Re: Wait...
I hate TBS broadcasting sports. I hate their camera angles and all that type of stuff. It's going to be a rough post-season watching TBS for all of October.

By the way, did anyone notice that Don Orsillo is the play-by-play man for the Phils/Rocks game right now? AND he was the PBP man for the Rockies' big win over the Pads the other night.

It's pretty weird. You'd think TBS would station him to cover the Sox games, huh? Considering that's the team he actually knows.

Re: Wait...
I think I mentioned that I felt dirty listening to Orsillo sound excited about non-Sox baseball.

But on the whole I don't mind TBS. Any day that I don't have to hear Joe Morgan, Steve Phillips, Rick Sutcliffe or Tim McCarver is a good day.

Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Re: Wait...
Visually TBS ain't great, but as far as commentary goes, well, it could be a WHOLE lot worse.

And to some degree, I almost feel like Don doing NL games is a way of testing himself. Maybe it was assigned, maybe he was offered a choice, I don't know. But he could see at least whether he works outside of New England.

Personally, I think he's been fine so far.

Re: Wait...
I don't think he's been bad at all. It's more that I'm thinking "but your MY announcer..." I feel two-timed. Sniff.
Just my two cents. Keep the change.

Re: Wait...
I think the key is that if you take away that feeling (which I have too), he sounds all right. I wonder if this is almost an audition for more nationally televised work in the future.

Re: Wait...
I kind of get that feeling, also. Maybe someone will try to snatch him away from NESN...

Re: Wait...
I hope Don makes "the show." He's solid. Of course, Remy brings out a goofy side in him that I fear will never show up on national tv.
Just my two cents. Keep the change.
