Trot Nixon an Indian

Trot Nixon agreed to a 1 year, $3M contract with the Cleveland Indians.

This is less than half of what Trot was making with the Sox last year ($7.5M) and I think that this is a good signing for Cleveland. I would only count on Trot playing around 100 games, but he can still hit when he's healthy.

I would imagine that we'll see a 3-way platoon with Trot, RF, Garko, 1B, and Blake rotating between both positions.

I wonder what this means for Shin-Soo Choo or Jason Michaels.  I think they must have a trade up their sleeve.

Re: Trot Nixon an Indian
They just signed Michaels to a 2 year extension, not sure if they will trade any of them.  They are probably banking on each one of them being hurt/not playing  the entire season.

I'm bummed I won;t be able to make Trot's first game in Fenway as an Indian. Love that guy, even if it was time to go.

Re: Trot Nixon an Indian
I think this is BS.  How could we NOT find a spot for him on our team?  If the yanks can find a spot for bernie williams year after awful year, we can find one for trot. ESPECIALLY at 3 mil.  This is a sad day to be a sox fan

Re: Trot Nixon an Indian
Assuming the Drew deal gets done, Trot would be rather extraneous. Both guys bat left-handed. However, I wholeheartedly agree that the Sox could have afforded him at $3M. The simple fact is they think Wily Mo has more upside at this point in their respective careers.

Going back to QotD
Going back to the QotD ("What's your 2nd favorite team"), this is just one more reason for me to like the Indians. :)

Re: Trot Nixon an Indian
Great value, not sure if it was neccessary (though agree with you, SoxDevil, a LOT easier to root for him as an Indian than some of the other teams he might've ended up on).

There'll now be 5 guys competing for time at the 2 corner OF spots. Nixon, Blake, Choo, Delluci, and Michaels.  To some degree, that's a good thing.  They've all got their strengths and weaknesses, and I think Choo and Michaels could both cover CF on the rare occasions Sizemore needs time off.  Realistically, take Blake out of the equation (my guess is that one of Marte or Garko won't hit ML pitching for part of the season next year, and he'll be seeing a lot of time at 1B or 3B) and you've got three LHH and one RHH.  They're going to get production from their corners, for low prices, but I'm not sure these guys will be happy with the arrangement.  Also, this is all hoping that Wedge plays the hot hand, and we'll see if that ends up being the case.

One of the other things I though of, with Trot's good eye (which seems to have gotten better with age) is that they can start, on a trial basis, letting Sizemore bat in RBI spots.  Sure, he's got speed and pretty good OBP last season (.375), but with his versatility and surprising power at the plate, he could be a run producer as well.  I know the Tigers are potentially looking at Granderson as a #3 someday, and he's like Sizemore-lite at the plate.

Re: Trot Nixon an Indian
The Indians outfield seems awfully crowded with similar types of players, none of whom is really star quality. It reeks of the Orioles, who seem to collect average players with similar skill sets.

That said, Trot has intangibles, as all you know, and his work ethic, attitude, etc., will certainly be a benefit to their younger players.

Re: Trot Nixon an Indian
I agree with the idea that this makes him a heckuva lot easier to continue rooting for.

What on earth were the Indians thinking extending Michaels' contract? He's definitely the worst player of the five.

KEEP MANNY!

Re: Trot Nixon an Indian
As you know, I've never rooted for the Sox players.  Nixon though is the only player I've always liked.  He is someone you want on any team because he plays the game the right way.  That being said, Sox made the right decision to let him go.
