Offense Isn't a Problem

The verdict is in: offense isn't the problem.

And here's the precise reason why we still stand a chance to win the World Series again. Because our offense can carry us. We need the pitching, though, and until the minute Mike Remlinger leaves the pitching staff we still aren't very good.

Matt Clement has been poor since the All-Star break. Tim Wakefield, Bronson Arroyo and David Wells have been average. Wade Miller is hurt, and hasn't been spectacular anyways this season. Curt Schilling is returning to the rotation on Thursday but no one knows how he will pitch. I'm not going to get into a big, philosophical discussion about this, but here are my thoughts:

  • This is easy: get rid of Mike Remlinger. He's not pitching well, and it doesn't look like he's turning it around.
  • Don't jump the gun on Craig Hansen. He looks like he is major league ready but I really don't want him to pull a Cla Meredith (I'm not saying Cla is finished either. He just hasn't been as good since the promotion). If we do call him, throw him into a meaningless game first against the Devil Rays or Royals. Not the Angels, Athletics, or Yankees.
  • Lenny DiNardo is a good pitcher, you just have to learn how to use him! He's been mis-used all season long and it's a shame. DiNardo should have a job next season.
  • Jeremi Gonzalez has been good lately, but don't fall into his spell. He's no Roger Clemens. He will have his bad times and when he does we should be prepared.
  • Keep Jonathan Papelbon in the rotation. I don't care how you do it, but do it. He has been our best starter recently. 'Nuff said.
  • Don't misuse Chad Bradford and Mike Myers. They both need to face the hitters they're supposed to. We can't afford to give up what seems like an automatic hit when they are facing a batter they struggle against. I really think Bradford is a good pitcher. He just needs to face only righties.
  • Maybe we should just take the leap and go young. Bring up Manny Delcarmen and Hansen to work along side Papelbon. Delcarmen is a better pitcher than a few pitchers in our bullpen, and Hansen has the potential to be great. I definitely believe Delcarmen should be in the bullpen right now, if not, both.

dinardo
Could you elaborate on how you think dinardo should be used?

RE:
I don't think DiNardo should be called up for 3 days and not be used at all. I don't think that should happen two or three consecutive times (which the Sox did earlier in the season). I think he's a good pitcher, but throw him into a 2-0 ballgame on the day he gets called up is something tough to do. I'm not saying DONT pitch him in 2-0 ballgames, I'm just thinking that there were better options in the bullpen instead of a guy that was called up from pawtucket that day.

Very strong evaluation...
Brian,

I agree 100% with all your observations.  In fact, I have nothing to add.  You think you could fill in for FranCOMA?  Good job.

RE:
I could definitely fill in for Francoma. He's got nothing on my track record.

Remlinger is bad....but the pitching staff still sucks without him :-)

I'm fine with youth, but not all at once. I don't want to have to rely on Delcarmen, Papelbon, and Hansen down the stretch. I'd be ok with using Papelbon in the bullpen and Delcarmen as the 11th man in the pen, but I don't think they should be given prominant roles this year. Even though I like those guys, I'm still skeptical with any rookie that may come up

Ever heard of K-Rod?
22 years old and dominated for the Angels in Post-Season in 2002.  Papelbon and Hansen may do the same.  Won't know unless you give them a shot...couldn't be much worse than we have.

K-Rod
1 in a million. Sure, it doesn't hurt to take a shot once in a while, but there is a very very very miniscule chance that all three of Papelbon, Delcarmen, and Hansen can be major contributers in September and October. Most minor leauge pitchers fail. The Sox have too much going on for them to be screwing around with stuff like that. Sure, I'll take Delcarmen over Remlinger, but I don't want Papelbon starting game 3 of the World Series with Delcarmen coming on in the 7th and Hansen in the 8th.

I'd Rather have
Papelbon pitching from what I have seen so far.  Keep him up and let him get 5-6 more starts.  I am for sure not comfortable with Miller, Arroyo, Wakefield and Wells...
