Edgar Renteria Traded
Edgar Renteria has been traded to Atlanta for third base prospect Andy Marte.
It's official. Now what do we do? Speculation is that we trade Marte to Tampa Bay for Julio Lugo, but c'mon, who wants Lugo? I'd rather keep Marte and either trade Kevin Youkilis or Mike Lowell. Or we could platoon Lowell and Youkilis at first base.
Marte is a stud prospect, though. I believe he is more valuable than Lugo and we would definitely be on the losing end of that trade.

Keep Marte
Let's be smart with our resources and look to the future, not the past.
This also frees up $. Interesting to see what they choose to do with that.

How much Money?
As for our 2006 SS, I hear Nomar is a free agent. ;)

friggin a!
partly for getting rid of rent and his bloated contract. and partly for scoring in marte. he had a poor showing in the majors last year hitting .140 and having an OBP of .227 in just 57 at bats. but looking at his minor league record and the fact that he's MLB-ready now or very soon and that his numbers will obviously improve incredibly this is a beautiful trade. props to the gm-by-committee (gmbc)!
now to the issue of actually having a ss. i'd love to see the gmbc go shopping for ollie-cab, which i've stated in a previous comment. given the fact that we now have marte, whom i deem as a more solid prospect than youkilis, i wouldn't mind offering him alone or in a small package to the angels for ollie.
how this pans out will be tremendously interesting!

Lineup
I think Marte needs another year at Pawtucket, but will start at 3B in 2007. Pedroia could either do the same, or could platoon with Cora. Exactly. It costs us nothing.
We could be looking at a starting infield in 2008 that includes Marte, Pedroia and Lowrie. Call Pavlov.
This year, we could be looking at a lineup that looks like this:
Damon
Loretta
Ortiz
Ramirez
Varitek
Lowell
Nixon
1ST BASE (youkilis, Lowell, Petagine, Other)
SHORTSTOP (Cora, Pedroia, Other)
Me likey.

Did they plan to trade Hanley first?
Did the team trade Hanley first, so that there would not be pressure to play him?
Trading Hanley now takes on a whole new perspective.

renteria
For the IF, we could start the year with:
1B: Lowell
2B: Loretta
SS: FA - Pokey, Clayton, AGonzalez (from Edes)
3B: Youk
with Pedroia at SS and Marte at 3B in Pawtucket, ready to come up during the season. But that's just my take on it.

11 mil??
FWIW, if it were Renteria for Marte straight up, fine, but I think we handed over too much additional cash to make this a good trade.

RE:
A Cora/Reese platoon until Pedroia ready is my best guess. The Fenway Faithful will love to see Pokey back playing on the Fenway dirt.
I think the only real question is this:
What's going on with the corner infield positions?
by Randy Booth on Dec 8, 2005 1:43 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Renteria
I think Youk should play 1B. Lowell is a gold-glove 3B and should continue to man that position.
Pokey in '06! (unless we find someone who can hit)

youk
1st: Youkilis
2nd: Loretta
SS: Pedroia
3rd: Lowell
Marte can ride the pine. If Lowell starts out slow again, then Marte will have a shot at the opening spot, and Lowell can platoon with Youk.

Lowell at 1B? No way!
He had the 6th least errors of all time or something silly like that last year.

Not saying Lowell at 1B
I like the flexibility. I like the defense. I like the offense. I don't like making Youk play 1B/3B alternate days.

Switching
Who would you rather have?
Hanley Ramirez and Edgar Renteria?
OR
Josh Beckett and Andy Marte??

You mean:
or
Beckett and Marte
I would rather have Beckett and Marte, i was joking.

Sox Prospects
Scouting Report: Blue chip third base prospect with all star potential. Excellent power (40 HR potential), drives the ball well to all fields. Above average fielder. Great plate discipline. Below average speed on the basepaths.

Manny for Miggy?
BTW, also reported in the article is that the Sox pay the Braves $8M towards Rent's contract, and $3M extra if his 2009 option is bought out (declined).

More on Renteria for Marte
The Braves are getting Renteria for about $6M per season. That's a pretty good deal if last year was an off year for Edgar. Was it worth Marte? Time will tell.

Meyers is a Yankee
The good news had to end at some point.
I am curious as to who the front office expects to be the left handed relievers for this team. We now have like 9 legit right handed relievers (about 4 more than we need) and only DiNardo from the left hand side.
by cdamon on Dec 9, 2005 9:37 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
LH relievers
Possibilities from FA: Mulholland, Rincon, Hammond, Embree. Errr... scratch that last one.
As much as has been done this offseason already, there's still a lot to do. Damon, Manny, Wells...?
by jlistf on Dec 9, 2005 10:06 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
would be happy with rincon
I had somewhat expected them to take one of a LH reliever in rule 5, but they took another righty.
I still don't understand why they didn't at least offer Meyers arbitration.

The reason
by absolutelax395 on Dec 9, 2005 2:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Not really
While he does have a pronounced platoon differential, he has averaged just over 4 batters (=1 inning) per appearance. Given that we have 2 RH setup guys for each slot likely, it is not even clear that Bradford will make the team.
Even with a 1 batter Bradford, I would still rather have Meyers than the left handed rif-raf that we will probably end up with. And we would only be stuck with Meyers for 1 year at the worst.
Instead the Yankees get a second round draft pick that should be ours now.
