Edgar Renteria Traded

Edgar Renteria has been traded to Atlanta for third base prospect Andy Marte.

It's official. Now what do we do? Speculation is that we trade Marte to Tampa Bay for Julio Lugo, but c'mon, who wants Lugo? I'd rather keep Marte and either trade Kevin Youkilis or Mike Lowell. Or we could platoon Lowell and Youkilis at first base.

Marte is a stud prospect, though. I believe he is more valuable than Lugo and we would definitely be on the losing end of that trade.

Keep Marte
We now have 3 3B. 1 former all star, 1 possible future all star, 1 possible future HOF.

Let's be smart with our resources and look to the future, not the past.

This also frees up $. Interesting to see what they choose to do with that.

RE:
Future should be the direction, but we'll see how LL handles this situation. Having a prospect like Marte shouldn't be traded for a one-hit wonder in Lugo.

(And it makes losing Ramirez is a little easier.)

How much Money?
How much cash are we sending the Braves along with Renteria?

As for our 2006 SS, I hear Nomar is a free agent.  ;)

friggin a!
this, i love. i absolutely love it.

partly for getting rid of rent and his bloated contract. and partly for scoring in marte. he had a poor showing in the majors last year hitting .140 and having an OBP of .227 in just 57 at bats. but looking at his minor league record and the fact that he's MLB-ready now or very soon and that his numbers will obviously improve incredibly this is a beautiful trade. props to the gm-by-committee (gmbc)!

now to the issue of actually having a ss. i'd love to see the gmbc go shopping for ollie-cab, which i've stated in a previous comment. given the fact that we now have marte, whom i deem as a more solid prospect than youkilis, i wouldn't mind offering him alone or in a small package to the angels for ollie.

how this pans out will be tremendously interesting!

Lineup
I hope we keep Marte. I felt bad for Edgar last year, as I thought he never really got a chance. The fanbase couldn't understand why we didnt keep Cabrera, and Renty struggled at first. His season was over as soon as the fans dogged him.

I think Marte needs another year at Pawtucket, but will start at 3B in 2007. Pedroia could either do the same, or could platoon with Cora. Exactly. It costs us nothing.

We could be looking at a starting infield in 2008 that includes Marte, Pedroia and Lowrie. Call Pavlov.

This year, we could be looking at a lineup that looks like this:

Damon
Loretta
Ortiz
Ramirez
Varitek
Lowell
Nixon
1ST BASE (youkilis, Lowell, Petagine, Other)
SHORTSTOP (Cora, Pedroia, Other)

Me likey.

SS
Since acquiring Loretta, we have a strong bat at 2B. Give the SS job to Cora or Pedroia. We can afford to carry one weak hitter. Cora is slick with a glove, and SS is Pedroia's natural position. Let 'em platoon. It costs us nothing.

Did they plan to trade Hanley first?
Just a thought.

Did the team trade Hanley first, so that there would not be pressure to play him?

Trading Hanley now takes on a whole new perspective.

renteria
I've heard we're giving back 11mil in the deal and I've heard we're planning on keeping Marte.  Though I don't know what my sources were for that.

For the IF, we could start the year with:

1B: Lowell
2B: Loretta
SS: FA - Pokey, Clayton, AGonzalez (from Edes)
3B: Youk

with Pedroia at SS and Marte at 3B in Pawtucket, ready to come up during the season.  But that's just my take on it.

11 mil??
And what was his salary last year?  ~$9mil?  So he cost us $20mil for one year's service!  Do we chalk up that ridiculous figure to Theo for signing him in the first place, or to LL for not having the patience to let Edgar settle in?  From the posts I've read in this thread and others, folks seem to be placing the blame squarely on Theo.

FWIW, if it were Renteria for Marte straight up, fine, but I think we handed over too much additional cash to make this a good trade.

by argo0 on Dec 8, 2005 5:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

not quite...
We're paying 20mil for one year of Renteria AND marte.  Had we not signed Renteria, we wouldn't have Marte now.

Very Good Point
I post corrected.

wow...
Seriously, who needs a GM? They've been really quiet on the free agent market, but if the Beckett, Loretta, and Marte deals are any indication of how this team does without a GM then I hope they never hire anyone.

RE:
Wow. I'm surprised everyone is praising the trade. I'm not saying it's a bad trade, because I like what we did (as long as we keep Marte), but I'm surprised NO ONE is against it.

A Cora/Reese platoon until Pedroia ready is my best guess. The Fenway Faithful will love to see Pokey back playing on the Fenway dirt.

I think the only real question is this:

What's going on with the corner infield positions?

by Randy Booth on Dec 8, 2005 1:43 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Renteria
It's hard to form an attachment to a player who is so soft-spoken and has been around only a short time. Since Edgar's season was mediocre at best, there is no real reason anyone in Boston should have a emotional attachment to the guy.

I think Youk should play 1B. Lowell is a gold-glove 3B and should continue to man that position.

Pokey in '06! (unless we find someone who can hit)

youk
can we please find a permanent spot for this guy?  He's easily the most mlb ready player we have in our farm (which he should've been out of two years ago).  Hes an on base machine, destroyed triple A pitching last year, and even added a little bit of pop.  He's ready to play NOW.  There should be no question who plays first base for us. Heres how I see our infield.

1st: Youkilis
2nd: Loretta
SS: Pedroia
3rd: Lowell

Marte can ride the pine.  If Lowell starts out slow again, then Marte will have a shot at the opening spot, and Lowell can platoon with Youk.

by forage on Dec 8, 2005 3:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

agree strongly
although I might try out a Lowell/Petagine platoon, which makes Youk swaps sides of the field alternating days.

by cdamon on Dec 8, 2005 3:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Lowell at 1B? No way!
If Lowell starts out slow, he should platoon with Youk or Marte at 3B. The other of Youk or Marte should play 1B. When Lowell -does- play it should be 3B without fail. This man is a defensive machine!

He had the 6th least errors of all time or something silly like that last year.

Not saying Lowell at 1B
I think Lowell should platoon with Petagine. But Lowell plays 3B, Petagine plays first. Youk plays 1B/3B depending on who else is playing.

I like the flexibility. I like the defense. I like the offense. I don't like making Youk play 1B/3B alternate days.

Rule 5 picks
Red Sox selected righthander Jamie Vermilyea in the major league phase of the 2005 Rule 5 Draft. Vermilyea was with the Toronto organization. The team also picked up righthanders Victor Ramos and Jason Richardson, and infielder David Bacani in the Triple-A phase of the draft.

Anyone know something about these guys?

So,

Who would you rather have?

OR

Sox Prospects
www.soxprospects.com has updated its Top 20 prospects list, with Andy Marte at the top, above Jonathan Papelbon. Interesting.

Scouting Report: Blue chip third base prospect with all star potential. Excellent power (40 HR potential), drives the ball well to all fields. Above average fielder. Great plate discipline. Below average speed on the basepaths.

Manny for Miggy?
I don't think it's a bad trade necessarily, depending on what else we get out of Baltimore, but I don't like the idea of trading Manny within the division.

clicky

BTW, also reported in the article is that the Sox pay the Braves $8M towards Rent's contract, and $3M extra if his 2009 option is bought out (declined).

More on Renteria for Marte
I checked out the Braves' fan blog and they had some interesting things to say about the trade. Generally, they didn't like it. The guys writing on that blog have a high estimation of Betemit and wanted to see him get a shot. They don't like that the team parted with Marte, but don't seem too broken up about it. They seem to be an upbeat bunch over there. I guess 14 seasons of winning does that for ya.

The Braves are getting Renteria for about $6M per season. That's a pretty good deal if last year was an off year for Edgar. Was it worth Marte? Time will tell.

Meyers is a Yankee
and we don't even get the Yankees draft pick because we didn't offer arbitration.

The good news had to end at some point.

I am curious as to who the front office expects to be the left handed relievers for this team. We now have like 9 legit right handed relievers (about 4 more than we need) and only DiNardo from the left hand side.

by cdamon on Dec 9, 2005 9:37 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

LH relievers
Sox could try Abe Alvarez there, though I'd still like to see if he can be a starter.

Possibilities from FA: Mulholland, Rincon, Hammond, Embree.  Errr... scratch that last one.

As much as has been done this offseason already, there's still a lot to do.  Damon, Manny, Wells...?

by jlistf on Dec 9, 2005 10:06 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

would be happy with rincon
but I would rather have had Meyers than Mulholland or Hammond.

I had somewhat expected them to take one of a LH reliever in rule 5, but they took another righty.

I still don't understand why they didn't at least offer Meyers arbitration.

by cdamon on Dec 9, 2005 10:49 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

The reason
THe reason thatr they didn't offer him abritration is becuase, if he excepted it, they would have two pitchers (Bradford and Meyers) that were suited for only one or two batters.

by absolutelax395 on Dec 9, 2005 2:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not really
I have heard the bradford 1 batter myth before.

While he does have a pronounced platoon differential, he has averaged just over 4 batters (=1 inning) per appearance. Given that we have 2 RH setup guys for each slot likely, it is not even clear that Bradford will make the team.

Even with a 1 batter Bradford, I would still rather have Meyers than the left handed rif-raf that we will probably end up with. And we would only be stuck with Meyers for 1 year at the worst.

Instead the Yankees get a second round draft pick that should be ours now.
