Them Are Fightin' Words, Johnny
Wow, Johnny Damon. Way to kick the gut, and step on the face of Red Sox Nation.
I just finished watching Damon's press conference as the newest member of the New York Yankees. Let me tell you one thing: I'm angry.
Damon is proud to be a Yankee, according to Damon himself. He's proud of the tradition, and he's proud to be on a team with Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and even Bernie Williams. Oh how easily he forgets about guys like Jason Varitek, Trot Nixon and David Ortiz.
Not only did the Yankees kiss his ass, but they kissed Michelle Damon's ass too! The most annoying woman ever to be associated with the Boston Red Sox is now going to be pampered like a Queen in New York. The first thing that Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman did was give Michelle 18 roses to welcome her to New York. Why? What did she do? Did she hit two home-runs (one being a grand slam) in game seven of the 2004 American League Championship Series? Or maybe Cashman gave her the roses because he knows she wears the pants in the relationship.
Damon said a few things that really stuck out in my mind. The first thing he said is that he's happy to be in such a "great" lineup. The Yankees do have a great lineup, huh JD? Considering the Sox led the league in runs this year. And last year. Oh, and the year before. But hey, the Sox lineup doesn't even compare to the Yankees', right?
He also said that it wasn't all about the money because the "mystery team," as he called them, offered more years and money, but he thought the Yankees have a better chance of winning. Yeah and if winning is everything, then let's just go play for the team that hasn't won the World Series since 2000. Oh, wait, though. I forget about the Red Sox who won just two seasons ago in 2004. Doesn't matter, though, right Johnny?
There was one more thing he said that just fried my nerves the most. He said, and I quote: "That team is dismantling." And, of course, he means Boston.
It may be true that we've dropped some mainstay players that have made a name for themselves in Boston, but the fact remains that the Boston Red Sox aren't about the players. It's about the "B" on the hat and the fans in the stands. And that's what Damon played for. It was obvious. He loved the fans and he loved playing for Boston. It shouldn't matter about who is or isn't on the team, because he knew that even if he went 0-for-4 and made two errors in the field, we weren't going to boo him. We loved the guy - no doubt about that.
We loved how he sacrificed his body out in centerfield and how he would lay down perfect bunts to keep the Sox ticking. We loved watching that long hair bounce up and down while he chased after fly-balls, and soon seeing his cap fall to the ground behind him. His personality, though, is what made him a fan-favorite.
Contrary to Bill Mueller, who was also a fan-favorite, Damon was loud and always gave his opinion. Most of that time his opinion was about the Yankees and, as we all know, it was never anything positive about them. But that's a big reason why we liked him. Some players won't even touch the rivalry subject, while Damon grabbed it with both hands and fed us, the fans, with quotes we wanted to hear.
Wear those pinstripes, Johnny, and kiss the ass of every person with any relation to the Yankees. It doesn't matter to me, personally. You could start a boy-band with Jeter and Rodriguez for all I care.
I hope your $13 million dollars love you, because Sox fans don't. And trust when I say this: you're going to regret everything.

Is it really about money?
Could it be that management is in turmoil at the moment, and just simply dropped the ball, so to speak?

Nasty Thread
The Sox knew how much they wanted to pay for Damon. The Yankees wanted to pay not just more, but a lot more. Damon went for the money. I don't hold that against him. I don't hold it against the Yankees (though I get vexed when Yankees fans pretend that their success is some inherent quality of the organization rather than them having double the payroll of the #2 team). I don't hold it against the Sox.
The Yankees overpaid. Damon is a good player, a star, but not a $13 a year for the middle of his 30s star. The Yankees' advantage is that they can repeatedly overpay like this and not cripple themselves. Even the Sox, with MLB's second highest payroll, must be more cautious than that.

And, jackass, your quote "hey, I hate the Yankees as much as the next guy"...duh, ummm.
Hey RANDY...block this jackass...he's being a typical Yankees fan...acting like it is HIS RIGHT to have his owner PAY for the best players...Hey Anonymous...GO FUCK YOURSELF...are you hard of hearing? This is a Red Sox blog...if we want to spew venom, bitch, moan, hate Steinbrenner, ARod, Jeter or think Cashman is a bitch in man's clothing and hate every jerk-off Yankee fan, we have the right to do so...if you have a problem with it, go bitch on your sites. This is a place for us to vent.

Maybe take a spelling class...
NY Yankees: $215 million
Red Sox: $124 million
As you think I am uneducated, that is a difference of....hmmmm $91 million??? Hmmm, ya think that gets you some better players?
Yankees paid $34 million in luxury tax to the Sox $4 million. Maybe it is you that needs a refresher course in math. Wait, I hear your Mom calling, it's bedtime...

Why?
Your "Holier Than Thou" attitude is getting old, and I certainly don't appreciate it. This is a statement you can't possibly prove, and its not even worth debating. Labeling a very large group of people as "rude jealous obnoxious people with few exceptions" hardly gives you credibility, or an invitation for enlightened conversation.
If Sox fans are all the things you say they are, why bother spending any more time at OverTheMonster.com?

Well put Matt...
We will not cheer Damon. Reason being that he lied. It is OK to go for the highest money, but when you say, "I could never play for the Yankees", then turn around and sign with them, ya think the fans might be pissed. Then, he bad mouths the franchise while in NY. He will get booed and that is just too bad...deal with it. He gave away his legacy in Boston when he signed with the enemy without batting an eye.
Hey, if some firm wanted to pay me that much more, I would go too. But it is the way he went about it. Enjoy his pop-up sally throws from center field...he is a great lead-off hitter but you really did not improve an arm over Williams...I could go from 1st to third on him. There, I have said my piece. By the way, do you realize there is a Yankee blog? It can be found at pinstripealley.com...go there and enjoy your $$$ team and fans.

yeah, but 2004 is a lot closer...
Anonymous Hero, you make me laugh! In one post you actually sound intelligent and your thoughts are clear. However, you turn around and make a blunder like you did.
I'm not saying 26 rings is worse off than 2, but I can manipulate any number I want to come up with the argument I need.

Geez
In short:
The Yankees have a better line-up than the Sox now--and they probably still will on opening day. The Sox have trouble filling out a lineup card, but the season is still months away. In truth, the Sox may have a bumpy '06. However, they may do very well. I personally think the Sox future is far brighter over the next 4-5 years than the Yankees.
While the Yankees have won 26 WS, that doesn't mean that they are the best team in baseball. They haven't been since 2000. They have a great line-up, but their pitching is suspect. It would be presumptuous to expect last year's fill in's to do as well. If RJ does well and Mussina stays healthy, they'll do well. I would expect NYY does about as well as last year, around the 90-win mark.
To the Yankees fans:
No one here has any problem with a true NYY fan, especially if they're knowledgeable. Intelligent debate & discussion is why we come here. The reason that Yankees fans are often reviled is because they pop up to say "We've signed your favorite player, na na na!" without anything intelligent to say. More than any other team in professional sports, the NYY are a worldwide bandwagon.
Red Sox fans have their own issues, but after 86 years of "wait 'til next year" that tends to happen. We're getting over it. Our biggest problem is our local sports coverage which holds a player roast every week. NY has the same problem in that regard, but there's a more pompous arrogance rather than a defeatist attitude (thanks Shaughnessy, Edes).
And history is only great as long as you're winning. Players don't come to a losing club because it has a great history.
