New Episode of Fireside Chats Red Sox Podcast

My co-host Paul and I talk through the hot stove season and all things going on down in Orlando. Come on over and take a listen.

MLB honors Red Sox for community involvement

It's always cool to see a team do good in its community. In addition to Wakefield winning the Clemente award earlier this year, now the team as a whole is being recognized for its work with students. Each year, the Sox are selecting 25 young students—fifth graders—from Boston public schools, and working with them throughout their middle and high school years, in addition to giving them $10,000 college scholarships. It's a really neat idea, and as someone particularly interested in education, I am especially pleased to see this happening in Boston. I hope it's something the rest of MLB can use as an example for the future.

Three Year Deal for Joaquin Benoit and Tigers

Benoit spun last year's huge bounce back performance into a 3year/$16.5M contract. Wow. I know all of us want Theo to go out and sign a big name reliever, but isn't $5.5M per year kind of a lot? Or is that just me?

Rosenthal: John Buck to sign with Marlins

So there goes that option.

GMs say the biggest names already under discussion include former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke of Kansas City; All-Star first basemen Adrian Gonzalez of San Diego and Prince Fielder of Milwaukee; outfield brothers Justin Upton of Arizona and B.J. Upton of Tampa Bay; All-Star right fielder Nick Swisher of the New York Yankees; All-Star closers Bobby Jenks of the Chicago White Sox and Jonathan Papelbon of Boston; and infielders Dan Uggla of Florida; Jason Bartlett of Tampa Bay and Mark Reynolds of Arizona.

Time Between Pitches: Leaders and Trailers

The Red Sox have the longest average time between pitches in the majors at 23.3 seconds. Yankees are second at 22.8. Also, Daisuke had the 22nd longest time, and it seems that almost all of those longer than him were relievers.

Theo: Red Sox want Beltre & Martinez

" Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein reiterated on Friday the team's strong interest in re-signing third baseman Adrian Beltre and catcher Victor Martinez, while acknowledging that the club has had recent discussions with Kevin Youkilis about returning to third base if Beltre does not come back, and that both the player and team are comfortable with that move."

Fukudome for Matsuzaka?

Posted on MLB.com's Hot Stove Blog. Here's the link to the original tweet from The Chicago Tribune's Phil Rogers. Probably nothing here of substance, but that sounds like an awful, awful idea to me.
