MLB Awards: C.C. Sabathia wins A.L. Cy Young

C.C. Sabathia won the AL Cy Young award in convincing style today, taking 19 of the 28 first-place votes and finishing with 119 points.

Boston's own Josh Beckett finished with 86 points, receiving 8 first-place votes. John Lackey received the remaining first-place vote and finished third overall. The voting took place before the post-season began.

I honestly thought that the it would be a closer race between C.C. and Josh, but both aces were phenomenal during the regular season and you can't fault either choice.

Congratulations to Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia, on behalf of Over the Monster, for winning the Cy Young and for a fantastic season.

That's the right outcome -- Beckett was about as good as Sabathia, but Sabathia didn't miss any starts due to injury and pitched more innings. That's the tiebreaker to me.

But Lackey got a first place vote?!? Whoever cast that ballot should lose his voting privileges. Lackey wasn't even the third best pitcher in the league this year.

Congrats to CyCy Cybathia. You can have all the Cys you want, as long as you're not at full strength against the Sox in the playoffs.

Beckett should have gotten more votes. Carmona should have gotten more votes also - he was in many ways better than CC.

This is actually bad news for Indians fans. CC being able to say he is a Cy winner, only drives his price up higher and higher. Its beyond unlikely they will sign him now, even more thaqn before. Congrats to the guy.

cant feel bad about this. We know who proved to be the better pitcher in the postseason.

Re: MLB Awards: C.C. Sabathia wins A.L. Cy Young
The right choice, but the award basically came down to the fact that Sabathia started 34 times and subsequently had more innings.  I thought it would be closer and I thought Bedard deserved a bit more respect, he was awesome when he was healthy.  His WHIP and K/9 rates were outrageously good.  For me, when Bedard was healthy, he would have won the "pitch the game to save your life award."

Though in saying that about Bedard, it was hard to go past Beckett in the playoffs...he was brilliant.

Bedard is filthy. And he's apparently on the block.

Is that serious?

I am from the "you can never have enough pitching" school of thought.  I reckon our management staff could keep him healthy and he would be great to have around when both Wake and Schill either fall apart this year or eventually retire next year.

Re: MLB Awards: C.C. Sabathia wins A.L. Cy Young
There are just two problems:
  1. Who would the Sox have to give up to get him?
  2. The Sox already have a six man rotation; go to seven and you're seriously harming the team.

Re: MLB Awards: C.C. Sabathia wins A.L. Cy Young
No way we start the season w/ a 6 man rotation. It isn't going to happen. I think Lester will be traded before opening day. I hate saying that.

Re: MLB Awards: C.C. Sabathia wins A.L. Cy Young
Trade Lester?  Because Schilling and Wakefield are in the rotation?  That's a nutty idea, unless you're talking about trading Lester as part of a deal for somebody like Bedard or Santana.

The team should build its rotation around Beckett, Dice-K, and Lester.  Buchholz can pitch long relief until the inevitable injury happens.

Remember 2006?  Bronson Arroyo for Willy Mo Pena?  Let's not do that again.

Re: MLB Awards: C.C. Sabathia wins A.L. Cy Young
That's the rumor, that he's available. But I'm sure it'd take an arm and a leg to get him from the O's. I believe they have a new GM there, I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't want his first move to be the team ace for Coco Crisp and a Single A'r, no?

Then there's the matter of the logjam of starters we've got, as Exile and Shocka mentioned.

Re: MLB Awards: C.C. Sabathia wins A.L. Cy Young
The Orioles need young pitching, but they also need star position players. A better match-up for them would be the farm systems of either LA team, or the Diamondbacks. The Sox have Ellsbury and maybe Lowrie as possible impact position players in the farm system. I think the O's could do better than Ellsbury, Buchholz, Lowrie for Bedard.

I wouldn't want to do that deal.

Re: MLB Awards: C.C. Sabathia wins A.L. Cy Young
I wouldn't either. Maybe the Sox could get him for less, but I am skeptical. He looks like a legitimate ace starter, and might've been the Cy if not for his injury.

Re: MLB Awards: C.C. Sabathia wins A.L. Cy Young
I believe Bedard has two years left (I could be wrong though). If I were the Os, I'd lock him up for another three.* The only way the Os are going to get back into the picture is through pitching.

*Then I'd flip Ramon Hernandez to the Mets for a package around either Gomez or Milledge and trade Miggy to the Sox for Coco, Lowrie and someone else.

One small point
You're all forgetting the fact that we share the AL East with the Orioles. I don't think for a second that the O's would trade Bedard to a division rival unless we were really getting shafted in the deal. Ain't gonna happen.

Re: One small point
Agreed with SD. To expand on his point: I'm guessing if Bedard is on the table, he's moreso on the table for NL teams than anyone else.

Agreed
I'm sorry if I wasn't clearer, but I was trying to say we're not getting Bedard, despite his being on the block.

Ellsbury and Buccholz?

No way.  A legitimate CF and somebody who could be a 20-game winner for Bedard?

Maybe for Santana, but no way would I do that for Bedard.
