One of the hardest adjustments for a catcher to make with a new team is learning the new pitching staff they'll be expected to handle. Luckily for Vazquez, that won't be a problem today. He and Rubby De La Rosa have spent most of the year as teammates, which should help ease the transition in the occasionally hectic circumstances surrounding a call-up.
Of note, Vazquez' arrival comes on the same day that John Farrell manages to get Brock Holt, Jackie Bradley Jr., Mookie Betts, and Xander Bogaerts all in the lineup at the same time. In fact, the Red Sox are down to just one "lame duck" player unlikely to factor into the 2015 team in Jonny Gomes. And given that there's a lefty on the mound today, putting Daniel Nava in his place wouldn't make much sense to begin with. Has Pierzynski's departure heralded the beginning of preparation for next year? It's starting to look like it.
First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
