Red Sox minor lines: The deceptive Manuel Margot

Manuel Margot's slash line is nothing special. But a closer look suggests there's more to his season.

Pawtucket L 1-2

Travis Shaw: 0-3, BB, K
Christian Vazquez: 1-3, 2B, BB, 2 K
Garin Cecchini: 1-4, K
Alex Hassan: 1-3, BB, K
Deven Marrero: 0-3, 2 K

Allen Webster: 5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 HR

It's not exactly the dominance we saw in Webster's last game, but he's just putting up consistently solid-or-better starts these days. His consistency issues are more of a pitch-to-pitch issue than an outing-to-outing one, but until we see that tested in the majors again, it's at least nice to see he's got some sort of momentum established.

Portland L 0-8

Blake Swihart: 0-4, K
Sean Coyle: 0-3, BB, 2 K
Michael Almanzar: 1-3, K
Keury De La Cruz: 0-4, 3 K, A

The Portland Sea Dogs knocked CC Sabathia around one night, then got shut down by a 25-year-old 24th round pick in Matt Tracy. You just can't predict baseball.

Greenville L 1-3

Forrestt Allday: 0-1, BB
Wendell Rijo: 0-3, BB
Manuel Margot: 0-4

It feels like we see a lot of this from Manuel Margot: plenty o balls in play, relatively few results. And indeed, the profile we see when digging a little deeper is of a player much better than his .266/.331/.417 slash line suggests. Margot has a reasonable-if-unspectacular walk rate (8.7%), a very low strikeout rate (11.1%), a fair amount of power (.151 ISO, 7 HR) and speed enough that the .282 BABIP starts to look pretty suspect, particularly in Low-A Greenville. Margot has been tabbed as a breakout candidate for a couple of years now. It's possible he's actually following through on that this year even if it's not readily apparent.

Lowell W 6-4

Danny Mars: 3-5, 2B, K
Cole Sturgeon: 1-4, K
Sam Travis: 2-4, K
Nick Longhi: 1-4, 2B

Simon Mercedes: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Simon Mercedes entered the year with some momentum behind him, but it died out with mediocre early perormances at Salem. Hopefully his second push will be more successful.

GCL Red Sox L 0-1 (In 11)

Josh Ockimey: 0-5, K
Victor Acosta: 0-5, 2 K

Ty Buttrey: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

The Red Sox have found somewhere Ty Buttrey can record outs! Hopefully he's figured something out in that lengthy layoff of his, because man oh man was it ugly before.

DSL Red Sox W 20-13

Luis Alexander Basabe: 2-4, BB, SB

Talk about an outlier in the system. I bet Devers wished he could have stayed for just one more game...
