Red Sox right now suck, and after winning a championship they look like a bunch of little kids picking up the game for the first time. This team seem to be a mile away from the championship team that played 8 months ago. The 2014 Red Sox has the same feel as the 2013 Giants. Both teams followed a championship with a season that was lack luster and tested true fans. The 2013 Giants finished 3rd in the NL West 10 games under .500 and 16 behind first place.
Now, the AL East is tough division and it shows. Right now the Red Sox are 8 games behind .500 with 7.5 games out of first and they still have a chance to finish first in the division (albeit, it is a long shot). Toronto Blue Jays, currently sit in first place, they have the worst winning percentage out off all teams leading their division. Compare this to the NL west which has only 2 real teams competing: Giants and Dodgers. During this time last year Dodgers were the clear threat for that division. When the "Puig Explosion" hit, the Dodgers ran away with the division leaving the Diamondbacks (2nd in the division) 11 games out of 1st place. This year the Giants and Dodgers are running away with the division. The Padres are in 3rd place, 10.5 games out of first. That is were the differences stop for the 2013 Giants and 2014 Red Sox. Both the 2013 Giants and 2014 Red Sox have had key injuries. Both teams had key players playing in an extended slumps. And what seems to be the major issue are pitchers that struggled to create outs. Both teams had relatively the same team playing the year after their championship run. But most importantly both teams played below their caliber of baseball.
This notion is starting to sink in. Red Sox are not going anywhere, much like the 2013 Giants. But looking at the 2014 Giants, bats are hitting, pitching is hot, and they are clearly the best team in the NL West. This shows that the Red Sox in 2015 should get out of this slump. Now, I still want the Red Sox to compete every night. To play as if their playoffs starts today. Find away to get runs, even if you expect the young speederst to bunt and the older power hitters to make sacrifices. The Red Sox still have a chance at winning the division, they need to fight, play hard, and set up to win. To show the fans they haven't given up, even if the chances are slim but most importantly to get the rookies into the habit of playing hard next season.
There is no reason why the Red Sox shouldn't run away with this division this year, but they're not. Just like the 2013 Giants, who were ( and still are) a part of the weakest division in the MLB. And the Giants fell flat on their face after their Championship run. However the Giants came back this years as a strong contender to go far in the playoffs. Right now the Red Sox seem to emulate the Giants of 2013, I bet you the 2015 Red Sox will also emulate the 2014 Giants.
(Note: I am not a Giants fan but I live in Colorado where I am saturated with NL west coverage. The similarities to the Giants and Red Sox I had to point out.)
