Red Sox minor lines: Felix Doubront rehabs

Felix Doubront is on his way back. But will he be rejoining the rotation, or heading elsewhere?

Pawtucket L 0-2

Mookie Betts: 1-3, BB, K
Garin Cecchini: 0-4, K
Ryan Roberts: 0-3, BB, K
Travis Shaw: 1-4, K
Christian Vazquez: 0-3
Dan Butler: 0-3, 2 K

Steven Wright: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K

It's been a pretty good year thus far for Boston's system as a whole, but if there's a major disappointment, it's Garin Cecchini. He's hitting .263/.341/.321 in 214 plate appearances this season. What power he had shown in previous years has basically vanished, and perhaps because of that, his walk rate has dropped dramatically as well. Cecchini can't even claim a particularly low BABIP to explain away his low batting average. Pitchers are throwing him strikes, and he's just not hitting them as well as he should. At 23, a repeat season in Pawtucket is hardly the end of the world, but for a guy who's never stumbled before, this is has been quite the concerning turn of events.

Portland W 5-3

Deven Marrero: 0-2, 2 BB, K
Blake Swihart: 2-4, K
Sean Coyle: 0-4, 2 K
Keury De La Cruz: 0-3, BB, K

Felix Doubront: 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

The Red Sox could have hidden away Felix Doubront longer than this, so the fact that he's already rehabbing suggests they do intend to see him back in the majors before too long. Don't be surprised, however, if he makes his return in the bullpen, or shifts there not long after.

Salem L 8-9 (In 12)

Simon Mercedes: 3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 1 HR

Salem W 4-0 (In 7)

Justin Haley: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K

Justin Haley is putting on an absolute show in Salem. Control had been the knock against him in the past, but if what he's shown in his first 55 innings this year is his new standard, that's clearly been taken care of. After issuing 74 free passes in 124 innings last year, these first two months have seen him surrender just 16. There really shouldn't be any fiddling around with piggyback starts anymore. Haley deserves his full rotation spot, and maybe even one in Portland before too long.

DSL Red Sox W 10-4

Rafael Devers: 1-3, BB, K
