The Red Sox (who have scored five runs in three games) will send A.J. Pierzynski (who is hitting .200/.216/.257 against southpaws this year) to the plate as the designated hitter against left-handed pitcher Scott Kazmir (who has a 2.05 ERA).
You can't make this stuff up.
Yeah, so...Here's the good news: the Red Sox just swept the Twins. They swept the Twins while scoring five runs in three games. So there's some precedent for the Red Sox winning games even in situations where their offense is non-existent.
Here's the bad news: the Twins have a 96 wRC+, the Athletics have a 113 wRC+. Jake Peavy of the 4.53 ERA is neither Jon Lester, nor John Lackey, nor even Brandon Workman at the moment. He does have one good start behind him--honestly, perhaps the best we've seen from him all year. But until he actually puts a second good start after the first, he's still just a bottom-quartile pitcher in results and peripherals.
First pitch is at 10:05 p.m. ET with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI because, yeah, it's west coast fun time.
