Xander Bogaerts had one very rough night at the plate Tuesday, perhaps providing the catalyst for John Farrell's decision to take him out of the lineup for one game. Boston's lineup is certainly at its best when the young shortstop is playing, but having started Boston's last 17 games, it was perhaps time for Xander to get a night to sit, watch, and recharge anyway.
Unfortunately, this does mean that the Red Sox are very much at less-than-full power when once again within range of finally clearing this .500 hump that they have been stuck under for so long. Eight straight losses playing one game under .500 is more than just frustrating, it's getting to the point where we have to assume it's of some serious psychological significance when they keep coming up short time and time again.
Hopefully tonight is the night that changes. Jake Peavy has given this team the chance to win just about every time he's taken the mound this season, whether it's been pretty or not. But after so many missed opportunities, it's going to be hard to believe it until it's actually over and done with.
First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. EST with broadcasts on NESN and WEEI.
