Red Sox minor lines: Trouble on the mound

A banner two days for minor league Red Sox pitchers it was not.

Pawtucket 5/2 W 6-1

Brock Holt: 0-3
Ryan Roberts: 2-4
Daniel Nava: 1-3, HR, BB, K, A
Ryan Lavarnway: 0-3, 2 K
Bryce Brentz: 0-2, BB, K
Garin Cecchini: 1-4, 2B
Christian Vazquez: 0-3, BB, 2 K
Alex Hassan: 1-2, BB

Brandon Workman: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
Rich Hill: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Alex Wilson: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Pawtucket 5/3 L 3-4

Christian Vazuqez: 0-3, BB
Alex Hassan: 0-4, 3 K
Daniel Nava: 1-4, 3 K
Bryce Brentz: 0-3, BB, 2 K
Garin Cecchini: 1-3, BB, K
Dan Butler: 1-4

Rubby De La Rosa: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 4 K

Rubby is losing control after an excellent start to the season. Eight walks in his last ten innings isn't good, even when he manages to avoid suffering much in the way of damage as he did in this start. The Red Sox don't exactly need him to be great, but if they're playing with house money on this one, that doesn't mean they wouldn't rather win with that house money.

Portland 5/2 W 5-1

Mookie Betts: 0-4, BB, SB
Deven Marrero: 1-3, 2B, BB
Travis Shaw: 2-3, 2 2B, BB, E
Blake Swihart: 1-4
Henry Ramos: 1-4, 2B, 2 K

Portland 5/3 Game 1 L 2-3 (In 7)

Mookie Betts: 2-4, K, SB
Deven Marrero: 0-4, 3 K
Travis Shaw: 2-3, 2B
Blake Swihart: 0-3
Henry Ramos: 1-3

Henry Owens: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Portland 5/3 Game 2 W 9-3 (In 7)

Mookie Betts: 1-5, SB
Deven Marrero: 1-4, HR, BB, K
Travis Shaw: 3-4, 2B
Henry Ramos: 2-4, 2B, K

Brian Johnson: 5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Mookie Betts plays fast on the bases, but loose with his on-base streak, managing to reach only once in two of his three games. Still, for the last two months that baseball has been played, this is literally as bad as it gets for him, which is kind of amazing.

Also nice to see Brian Johnson making a smooth transition to Double-A, and Henry Owens perhaps starting to rein in some of his recent troubles. That he only allowed the one walk is likely the biggest indication of such a turnaround.

Salem 5/2 L 2-7

Austin Maddox: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 HR

Salem 5/3 L 3-5

Cody Kukuk: 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K
Simon Mercedes: 3.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K

...Moving right along...

Greenville 5/2 L 1-4

Wendell Rijo: 0-3, BB, K
Manuel Margot: 0-3, BB

Ty Buttrey: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Greenville 5/3 L 2-4

Tzu-Wei Lin: 0-3, BB, 2 K
Wendell Rijo: 2-3, BB
Manuel Margot: 2-4, SB

Trey Ball: 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 HR

You could say that Ty Buttrey's season debut did not go quite as planned. It can't be easy to make your first really competitive start of the year in May against players who have been plugging away for a month, no. But that's an impressively bad day at work.
