"The Rookie", a painting by Norman Rockwell that depicts Ted Williams and fellow Red Sox teammates at the moment in which a rookie walks into spring training, has been sold at Christie's auction house for $22.6 million to a private bidder.
The painting was the cover of the Saturday Evening Post back in 1957:
Ted Williams only made about $1.5 million dollars in his entire career. Even if you adjust for inflation, you're still talking about something like $10-15 million in today's dollars, according to the first inflation calculator Google brought me. Poor Ted Williams couldn't even afford his own painting, and he's the coolest part about it.
Good thing baseball players have a union now, huh?
