Red Sox minor lines: Busy times in Portland

Travis Shaw hits for Power, Henry Owens walks the world, and Mookie Betts' streak is snapped...at one. It was a busy day in Portland.

Pawtucket L 3-5 (In 10)

Ryan Roberts: 3-5, 2B, 2 K
Daniel Nava: 0-3, BB, K
Ryan Lavarnway: 2-4, BB
Christian Vazquez: 0-5, 2 K
Garin Cecchini: 1-4, 2 K

Allen Webster: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Drake Britton: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 1 HR

This is the first time Webster has walked more than two batters since April 18. Obviously it would have been better if he hadn't, but if this is what he's like on bad days now, still keeping the hard contact down...I know it feels like we've said this a dozen times before, but is Webster finally putting it all together?

Portland L 0-5 (In 7)

Mookie Betts: 0-3
Deven Marrero: 1-3
Travis Shaw: 2-3, 3B
Blake Swihart: 0-3, K
Henry Ramos: 1-3, K

Henry Owens: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 8 K

Portland W 8-2 (In 7)

Mookie Betts: 2-4, 2 2B
Deven Marrero: 2-4, 2B, K
Travis Shaw: 1-4, HR
Henry Ramos: 2-4

There's a fair bit to get through here.

  1. Yes, at one point yesterday Mookie Betts had failed to reach base in two games out of three. Thankfully, he was given the chance to put that behind him in a hurry with the double-header, but it's strange how streaks can work like that.
  2. Travis Shaw is hitting the ball with some serious authority these days. That's 8 homers now in 153 at bats--about half-again the pace he set in 2012, his best year at the plate. He's still kind of a long shot to make an impact on the major league roster, but there's so little corner infield power in the system that he's still very much worth watching.
  3. Am I crazy to think Henry Owens needs a promotion? He's stuck in a weird place right now where he's walking a batter an inning and getting no negative feedback from the game itself. I'm sure coaches aren't turning a blind eye to it, but maybe in Triple-A they'll actually be able to punish him for the baserunners and force him to actually make the necessary changes.

Greenville L 3-10

Forrestt Allday: 2-4, BB, POCS
Tzu-Wei Lin: 2-4, 2 2B
Wendell Rijo: 0-4
Manuel Margot: 1-3, BB, CS

Trey Ball: 0.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 0 K

Just repeat after me: Trey Ball is a high-upside project coming off the disabled list and I will not go cry in the corner. Trey Ball is a high-upside project coming off the disabled list and I will not...I will not...I--
