Comments: Brentz has been in the Sox system now for 4 years and has seen his stock rise (pre-2012 he made BA's Top 100 list) and fall (this year he doesn't even crack the Top 15 on his own team). Some of that decline has to do with his limited skill set against superior pitching and maybe just some might have to do with the ill-fated self-inflicted gun-shot wound suffered during last year's off-season. Brentz has one skill that is undeniable and that is power. He slugged 30 HR across two levels in 2011 then 17 in 2012 at AA and 19 last year at Pawtucket. Brentz's plate discipline numbers have taken a hit as he's climbed levels as seen by last year's 0.313 OBP with 21 BB against 90 SO. Brentz is also limited a bit defensively but he is improving and has a very good arm. He is stil only 25 and with a good year at AAA could push for some time with the major league club.
- Brentz was originally drafted by the Indians out of high school in the 2007 draft but did not sign, opting instead to play college ball at Middle Tennessee State.
- Brentz was the #64 rated prospect by BA in their pre-2012 season Top 100.
- In the somewhat infamous shooting incident, Brentz shot himself in the leg while cleaning one of his guns during the off-season and has now become the butt of endless "shooting" jokes that just wont die.
Season Outlook: This is most likely Brentz's watershed year. He's already 25 and aging out of "prospect" status and will need a solid year along with some time in the majors to prove he's anything more than a AAAA type player. If he can show some ability to hit breaking pitches and some improvement he could be in the mix as a 4th outfielder and occasional DH for the Sox in the future, but that future is coming fast.
