Tuesday was the deadline for eligible players to file for arbitration. The Red Sox had five arbitration-eligible players on their roster, and all five filed without reaching a deal before the deadline: Junichi Tazawa, Andrew Miller, Mike Carp, and new acquisitions Jonathan Herrera and Burke Badenhop.
Arbitration hearings are not scheduled until February, and can take place anytime between the 1st and 21st of that month. That gives the Red Sox at least a few weeks, and possibly up to a full month, to negotiate new contracts with each of these five players. Given the relatively limited money involved for all five, there shouldn't be any trouble coming to an agreement with each of them before too much longer.
Tazawa and Carp are both in their first year of arbitration eligibility. Tazawa, as the team's primary setup man once Koji Uehara became the closer, could see one of the largest raises, from $815,000 to $1.1 million, according to MLB Trade Rumors' projections. As Carp made all of $508,500 in his final pre-arb season, he could end up making similar money to Tazawa after batting .296/.362/.523 in a bench role, more than doubling his salary.
The lone player in his second year of arbitration, infielder Herrera is projected for a $1.2 million salary. The Red Sox sent Franklin Morales and Chris Martin to the Rockies for Herrera last month, giving them a bench piece capable of playing shortstop in the process. They'll likely have saved a little money going with Herrera, too, as Morales was projected for almost $2 million in salary. While that's not much of a difference, considering the Red Sox missed the luxury tax by less than $226,000 last year, every cent you can save could very well count.
Miller would have likely been in line for more than the $1.9 million projected by MLBTR, considering it's his last year of arbitration eligibility, but losing half of his first great season to injury cut into that. Badenhop projects for just slightly more than that, at $2.1 million, in his own final season of eligibility before free agency.
All told, MLB Trade Rumors projects this group of five for $7.6 million in 2014.
