Red Sox vs. Blue Jays: Rest for the weary

Jim Rogash

The Red Sox are getting ready for October, resting up some of their hardest-worked players as the regular season winds down.

Having clinched the AL East, the Red Sox will take the opportunity to rest some of their starters as they try to wrap up a series win against the Blue Jays Saturday night.

There's no question that the Red Sox still need to win some games. The Tigers and Athletics are both pushing for the top spot in the American League, and the Sox would do well to both secure home field advantage, and ensure they're playing the team that may already have used their ace on the Wild Card game.

That being said, the biggest thing right now is to keep everyone healthy--or get them there if they're not already. So a day without Dustin Pedroia seems like a great idea, as does getting Mike Napoli and Jarrod Saltalamacchia some time off. Sure, it means John McDonald is playing second, and yeah, Will Middlebrooks at first is a little unusual, but this is still a team that can win this game with Clay Buchholz on the mound. If it's less likely than it would be on a typical day, well, that's a margin the Red Sox can afford to give away with the magic number, at long last, having hit zero.
